The indoor golf boom that's taking over the Corridor

When Sean McCarty was growing up in West Branch, he had an advantage not every golfer had. His parents owned the local golf course.

Still, the rising star had to deal with something every golfer in Iowa — and in the Midwest — had to deal with in those days. Winter can be tough on your game.
Or at least it was in Mr. McCarty's youth. These days, not so much.

The indoor golf industry has exploded in the United States, with more than 1,600 businesses, according to published reports. The golf simulator business has seen "rapid" growth and is projected to reach $3 billion by 2039. Market.us projects that number could reach $6.1 billion by 2034 and The National Golf Foundation estimates some 6.2 million Americans are using golf simulators.

Golf, if you didn't already know, is a hugely popular sport. Any time of the year. And not only in Iowa.

One facility that doesn't have to worry too much about the weather is PinSeekers in Tiffin, which offers "golf and entertainment" with all-weather "luxury golf suites" as well as mini golf and duckpin mini-bowling. It also has simulators for instruction or just golfers wanting to get some swings in. They also offer food and have live music.
While Topgolf generates more than $1.8 billion annually with more than 100 locations nationwide, Pinseekers is a smaller regional operation with another facility in DeForest, Wis.

"We want to be one of the premier entertainment facilities," said PinSeekers general manager Ben Splichal, a PGA pro and instructor. "We can do most any event.
"We just want to ride the wave and keep golf alive" year-round, but especially in the winter months.

There are other options in the Corridor, as well, including X Golf in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, Ringer Golf in Cedar Rapids and Golfletics Performance Center in Coralville.
