Data can tell you a lot about an athlete. Coach Jeffrey Nwankwo also knows it can’t tell you everything.

With a master’s degree in health information management, Nwankwo brings an analytical eye to coaching cross country, basketball and soccer at Coppell Middle School West. He uses information to help athletes improve, but the legacy he cares about most is much more personal.

Positive impact. Great memories. Relationships that last beyond the season.

That’s what Coach Nwankwo hopes his athletes take with them.

Coach Marieke Mastebroek has always looked beyond the top of the results sheet.

Her background in biomechanics and underwater video analysis developed a passion for the technical details of swimming, breaking down strokes frame by frame to help athletes improve.

But the measure that matters most to her is progress throughout the entire team. As a former Coppell head coach and now an assistant, Mastebroek takes the most pride in helping developing swimmers reach their potential just as much as the fastest athletes in the pool.

For Coach Ramon Martinez, getting outside is part of the lesson.

At Coppell Middle School North, he teaches CTE and Outdoor Education while coaching tennis, bringing a simple philosophy with him: enjoy being outside, stay engaged and experience more than what happens inside four walls.

Just as important, Martinez wants students and athletes to know they have a coach who will listen to them and challenge them to think.

For Coach Sarah Nielsen, the best part of coaching is seeing the difference between the beginning of a season and the end.

In her 26th year of teaching and coaching, she still gets fulfillment from watching athletes learn, master new skills and grow in confidence along the way.

Just as important are the relationships built throughout that process. Nielsen hopes she is remembered for her character, positive attitude, high energy and the way she treats people with kindness and respect.

Push them hard. Keep them laughing.

That’s the balance Coach Lukas Moberg hopes his athletes remember.

His experience living in Japan taught him the importance of seeing the world through someone else’s eyes and understanding that every student brings a different perspective. It’s a lesson that has helped shape him into a more patient and understanding coach.

At Coppell Middle School West, Moberg coaches tennis, soccer and cross country while teaching Texas history.

And as he puts it, maybe he wasn’t always the nicest coach, but hopefully he was the funniest.
