Officially introducing one of my best friends and my postpartum partner!

Katie runs Blooming In Postpartum and she has been an absolute blessing in my life and with my clients. Letting her focus on the postpartum support while I handle prenatal visits and births is the best arrangement I could've hoped for. ❤️

As someone who has had two Cesareans myself, YES!!
Use other wording if it makes you feel empowered or makes you laugh. I do it sometimes! But don't add to the stigma around Cesareans.

BIRTH IS BIRTH

Language matters. And sometimes, in their effort to make cesarean birth feel softer, people accidentally send the message that the word cesarean is something we need to soften in the first place.

Aa birth workers, friends, family, etc… You don’t have to call it a “belly birth” to make it a birth.
You don’t have to call it a “sunroof birth” in an attempt to be humorous
And for the LOVE, a woman isn’t a body that was “sectioned,” or a vessel a baby was “extracted” from.

They gave birth. By cesarean.

There’s nuance here, of course. If you had a cesarean and “belly birth” feels empowering to you? Use it. If “sunroof baby” makes you laugh and brings joy to your story? That language belongs to you. We will never tell someone how they should talk about their own experience. ( I (Lily) actually say sunroof exit sometimes when describing my experience lightheartedly.)

But as birth workers, providers, educators, friends, and family members, we don't need to assign cute nicknames to someone else's birth in an attempt to validate it. Let her name her birth.

Because cesarean and C-section are not dirty words.
Cesarean birth isn't less of a birth.
And we don't have to make it sound more like something else for it to count.

It has been a very busy time for me! I was at a training all weekend in Ann Arbor, and then this baby decided he was ready to meet his parents... and then he decided to be real stubborn about it! This momma was so strong and her partner was amazing support. Welcome Earthside, sweet boy.

Pre-eclampsia is a serious condition that I am seeing more and more among pregnant people. I went through it myself with my first child in 2019 and it is a major part of what set me on my doula path.

This year I will be walking in the Grand Rapids Promise Walk for Pre-E. If you'd like to join my team and come along on this walk, I'd love to have you with me! Sign up at the link below. If you'd prefer to support monetarily, you can donate at the link as well.

Sometimes, for the health of momma and baby, plans have to change. When that happens, I'll be there for a late night "tuck in" visit and back again the very next morning to continue support . This fierce little princess decided 34 weeks was enough time in utero and her brave momma consented to a Cesarean to bring her safely Earthside. Welcome, baby girl. ❤️
