Four year ago today, I started a path of becoming a personal trainer. I say becoming because although acquiring the credentials to be a personal trainer is a short certification away, you should never stop learning, growing and becoming a better trainer and individual. I’ve been fortunate to train under some, who I consider the best at their craft in areas of body building, sports performance, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and cardiac/pulmonary rehab. These individuals are people who excel in coaching and working with people who almost make coaching/training look effortless while achieving the desired results. In my opinion, being “self mad is a toxic myth. You are a product of those who you consistently surround yourself with and I would never be where I am now without a tremendous amount of help, influence, and friendship from some of those I consider the greats. I’m thankful for my family, my wife, my friends, the individuals I’ve been fortunate to work with and train, but most importantly, God for turning training into something so much more than I could see at the time. Four years has gone by so fast and I’m excited to see what the next four brings. I have a feeling that the surface has only been scraped.💪🏽

Grateful is an understatement to those who’ve invested in me all along the way. Helping others in their goals of fitness, health and performance is the only line of work that has truly never felt like work to me. It’s an incredible feeling to go to bed at night and be excited about waking up early to help others get one step closer to achieving their goals and aspirations. It never gets old, which is how I know I’m doing exactly what I’ve been called to do in this life 🙏🏼

Starting off this Monday morning by giving a massive shoutout for her consistent hard work over the last 2 years. I’ve had the privilege of working with Jessica through FaceTime for almost a year and a half, but I’m not going to take credit as she is the one who has been consistently working hard to get to where she is. She has made a tremendous amount of progression through not only her weight loss, but her overall gym performance. She’s grown physically and mentally throughout her process. I’m extremely proud of you and can’t thank you enough for allowing me to be apart of your journey 🤗

Where’s my archers at? 🏹

Chances are, If you like to bow hunt or just enjoy shooting a compound bow a few times a week, you have potentially developed a strength imbalance.

What does that mean?

Developing a strength imbalance from repetitively doing the same motions over and over means that you are at higher risk of injury. For archery, it can lead to lower back pain, posture imbalances, and overall upper extremity strength imbalances. Simply said, you’re only training half the movement when you shoot.

I’m a right handed shooter meaning I pull a lot with my right arm, push with my left arm, and rotate my torso to the right repetitively. To offset this strength imbalance, I perform this exercise only on my left side and complete the number of repetitions I did the day before. Yesterday I shot 60 arrows. Today, I performed 4 sets of 15 reps.

It was an incredibly awkward movement when I first began doing this as my body was not familiar moving this way, but in time, I’ve noticed a tremendous difference in my overall shooting performance. 💪🏽

This is my personal approach and it has worked wonders on balancing out the repetitive nature of archery. I love shooting and want to be able to perform the sport for as long as possible! 🏹

E = mc2 🤓

Who remembers learning Albert Einstein's theory of special relativity? Did you know that equation applies to sports performance? Hear me out 🏃🏽‍♂️

Force = Mass x Acceleration, in other words, how fast you lift is just as important as how much you lift if you’re trying to improve force production. “Connor, why would I want to improve force production?” What a great question!

Force applies to any explosive movements you do such as sprinting, jumping, and other explosive movements. When you jump, you apply force into the ground which allows you to be projected in the opposite direction. When you sprint, you apply force to the ground each step you make which propels your forward. The more force you apply, the further the body is projected.

How do you increase force production to run faster, jump higher and be more explosive? Let’s go back to the equation force equals mass times acceleration. By increasing acceleration with the proper resistance, force production is therefore increased. When you program proper training modalities into your program that mimic specific demands, you will see a clear improvement in force production.

This post is just scraping the surface of the topic of force production. One of the absolute best strength building exercises for your vertical pull is accommodated resisted pull ups. Using chains or bands to create a resisted pull up makes the starting position much easier on your shoulder complex and much harder on the muscles at the top of the rep. Notice how at the bottom of the rep (i.e. hanging position) I’m not holding up the 90 pounds of chained resistance? This is the portion of the movement that creates far less stress on my shoulder complex. At the top of the rep, the chains are almost fully lifted off the ground to place tremendous loading stress on the proper muscles. This is great for not only building strength, but preventing injuries. If you want to be stronger, have healthier shoulders and pain free performance then this exercise is for you 💪🏽
