Dolly’s story: Dolly is an 11 day old Mini Nubian and just the sweetest baby plus she is a true fighter.
However due to her not getting colostrum she is fighting literally for her life right now. Joint infections have set in and she is barely able to walk the last couple days.
Monday she saw the vet to determine what was wrong. Since she has swelling in back right hock and was struggling to walk she was diagnosed as having a joint infection.
Joint infections or umbilical infections are the top issues a kid (baby goat) faces when they 301don’t get the colostrum the first 24 hours of life. Sadly we don’t think Peaches got any colostrum or milk the first 24 hours.
I wasn’t home when she was born and by the time I got home it was past 24 hours. My helper thought she was eating as her mom Blueberry was caring for her. The problem is Blueberry only has one parking udder/teat this year so it got so swollen the baby couldn’t get her mouth around it.
When I got there the next day I found Peaches sister who had passed away. I immediately realized Peaches wasn’t eating because she was lethargic & so thing, plus I saw Blues tear was too large for her.
I immediately started powered colostrum & milk but I missed the crucial 24 hours which I constantly am beating myself up for being gone for 2 days. We all need breaks though and unfortunately stuff like this happens at the farm sometimes.
Now I’m doing all I can to save Peaches and give her the best shot at healing. Because she didn’t get the colostrum she doesn’t have the antibodies her body needs. Often kids get umbilical or joint infections when they don’t get colostrum.
That’s exactly what’s going on with Peaches. She has joint infection in back right leg and now front knees are swollen also.
She is currently on antibiotics & pain meds for a week. Once those are out most likely bet will try another round of both.
However while I love my vet and they are awesome I want to get Peaches to NC STATE veterinary school & hospital! They are the very best in the state and her best shot at getting the best care possible.
That won’t be cheap though plus I need to get her a wheel chair so she can move around without having to hold up all her weight. Goat wheelchairs are a couple hundred unless I can find someone to build one.
For NC state I will have to pay them, plus take off work, travel there (4 hours plus drive), food, gas, etc.
So I’m trying to raise $2,000 at least. I know it sounds like a lot, but once you add it all together the number gets high quite quickly.
That’s why I’m doing the raffle with over a grand with of prizes. I am hoping and praying that enough people will buy tickets or just donate so I can get Peaches the best of the best care plus her wheelchair!
