Collection doesnât mean making the horse smaller or slowerâalthough those things may sometimes be part of the process.
Think about the word collection itself. To collect something means to gather it, organize it, and bring it together in a more purposeful way.
In the same sense, collecting the horse is the gradual process of helping him reorganize his balance, alignment, strength, and energy. Over time, we help him carry himself in a way that is more coordinated, more sustainable, and ultimately more beautiful.
True collection is not about restricting energy; itâs about refining and directing it. The horse should feel more connected from back to front, more balanced from side to side, and more capable of carrying weight behind while remaining supple and expressive.
When collection is developed correctly, the horse doesnât lose movementâhe gains quality. He becomes lighter in the forehand, more powerful behind, and more elegant in his way of going. His posture reflects strength rather than tension, and self-carriage rather than restraint.
Collection is not something we do to the horse. It is something we patiently develop with the horse through correct training, thoughtful gymnastic work, and a commitment to improving his balance and well-being over time.
At its best, collection promotes both integrity and eleganceâthe horse becomes stronger, more comfortable in his body, and more capable of expressing the beauty that was there all along.
