The last thing I need is another bike project.. But, thanks to L.T. Blackwood @ Trans Am Cyclery, I have this 1971 Schwinn Sports Tourer. It's a 24" frame and came with all original components. The Sports Tourer holds a nostalgic place in my bicycle history. I bought a new one in 1974. It was the first bike I bought with my earned money. I sold it before moving to New Mexico and joining the Air Force. I wouldn't put the effort into this if not for this. I don't believe this bike has ever been apart by the condition of the grease. These are actually really fine frames as they were built by Schwinn in the Chicago plant and along side of the Paramounts. Straight gauge Cro-Moly, internal reinforcement butting, and hand fillet brazed. A bit heavy, but super strong. This one will get fresh paint this fall along a few frame mods.... water bottle bosses and pump peg. Contemplating using the stock components or upgrading to some nice vintage Campy ??? Anyhow, thanks again L.T. appreciate you thinking about me !!! (no, it won't be yellow)

Spent a great Sunday afternoon at the "Classic Car Studio" BMX show..... About a hundred bikes but not a lot of 26" cruisers.. Certainly these were the only 3 bar cruisers. I took old and new.. Cook's and S*M..

Quite a while since my last bike post,, Took a break thru all the covid drama. This is a fitting bike to make a comeback.. S*M 26" Covid Crusier in trans gold. Took sometime to finish this, but what a fun ride.. Out cruising when the weather cooperates, a bit more work than a 16 lb road bike, but great early season workouts.. bonus: practicing my wheelies !!

Week #37..... Something completely different..
I have hung on to two of my daughter Emily's bikes... The first, little red 18" Univega pit bike . I got this for her in 1984, she was 4 years old. After a rebuild, We took it to Portland last year. Now my 5 year old Grandson, Parker, is riding it.. !(there's a photo of him on it.) Another nice memory is that my nieces Becca & Caroline, and nephew Tyler, learned to ride a 2 wheeler on that little red thing. The photos here of the cousins together are 1988. They're now adults, with kiddos of their own..
The 2nd bike here is my daughter's 1988 Schwinn Pro "Yo".. It's a fairly unique freestyler with a black chrome frame and mostly pink components.. It is 99% original, even the pink tires.. This one will be heading out to Portland in a year or two also.. He might not like the pink stuff???

Week #36 ...... In previous posts, I highlighted two amazing 60th Anniversary Paramounts.. ( Reynolds 853 steel versions) This week is the 60th Anniversary titanium frame.. WOW.. I searched quite a while for this frame.. These were built by the renowned Serotta bicycle company for Schwinn. Schwinn had been sold to the "Scott" group and headquartered in Boulder CO. Don't really know the actual number built, but somewhere a bit over 500, This one is outfitted with Ultegra and carbon wheels.. The fork is not original.. It's comfortable, fast, and light. Yes, it has a 30 tooth large cog..... what can I say, getting old !!

Week #35.... What can I say??? You got to have one modern carbon bike.. I resisted carbon for a lot of years, but succumb after LT & Tony Blackwood from Trans Am / SouthSide Cyclery built up this one.. It's a 2017 (or so) Giant TCR. Full carbon... frame, wheels, one piece stem and bars.. The amazing thing for me is the SRAM gruppo.. It's the SRAM Red E-Tap.. The front & rear derailleurs are operated through blu-tooth signals from the shifters. No wires, No cables.. After 3 years and many miles, it has been flawless. I basically had always ridden 30+ year old downtube, friction shifting Campy stuff. This was like a space ship to me.. It comes in right at 15 lbs. So light with racing geometry, this is a fast, responsive ride. It's my daily rider..

Week # 34..... It's been a number of weeks since the last "m bicycle works" post.. No, haven't run out of bikes yet ! This one is worth the wait.. 1976 Schwinn Paramount P-14 Custom Track.. One of my top 5 favs.. 95% original. (bars have been changed) This still has it's original, practically flawless, paint....original saddle, and components. Sometime ago I ordered a provenance report from Richard Schwinn, It revealed this had been ordered by a Schwinn employee and built in July 1976. It's a custom sized 23.25" seat tube and has the chrome lugs and fork crown option. ( Schwinn offered a few options on track bikes ) There's minimal wear on the chain ring and the pedals show as new.. Very nice unmolested example. !!

Week #33... 1958/62 OLMO Deluxe... This is a crusty example.. Not a ton of information about OLMO's of this vintage, and not really well known in the states. I've never been able to lock-down the specific year of manufacture.. not all components are original. I believe the hubs & rims, rear derailleur, brakes & levers, and seatpost are original. Other things I have just added along the way.. Giuseppe Olmo was a very accomplished racer throughout the 1930s, and began building bikes in 1938.. Highly regarded with a long racing heritage.. The Campagnolo "Gran Sport" rear derailleur was the beginnings of our modern shifting systems introduced around 1953.. The Gran Sport components were also the first "groupset" introduced to the cycling market. This derailleur is a variation of the 53 version and began production around 1955.. The chainring I found on my last visit to Portland. This also came with bar end shifters, of which I'm not a fan, swapped them out for downtube shifters... One other cool item is the "TA", French made, rack on the front.. Yep, crusty... but still a nice ride-able bike.. I've often thought about a restore for this frame, but really not feasible without all original components..

Week # 32.... 1982 25" Schwinn Voyageur 11.8.. This is my second Japanese (Panasonic) built Schwinn frame. I would say I have logged more miles on this bike than any other I own. Bought new in 82 and was my trainer, commuter, distance, and sport bike for 4 years from 82 to 86.. I replaced it with a new Paramount. The frame was built with double butted cro-moly. and some decent (for the time) Shimano Altus & Sugino components. I rebuilt this a couple years ago using a weird mix of Campy drivetrain components and a set of NOS Suntour Superb brakes and levers. I also opted to go with a set of 27" Sun rims & 28mm Continentals. Super smooth with this combo.. Great bike !!

Week # 31
1973 Schwinn World Voyager.. Cool Orange w' chrome lugs.. These frames were built in Japan by Panasonic, to Schwinn specs, and imported to the U.S. Not the lightest bikes in the world, straight gauge 4130 cro-moly tubing, and pretty much bullet proof.. I guess Schwinn was somewhat timid about imported bikes ( I don't know when they imported their first bikes) but these are not featured in their 73 catalog. The 1974 models are in the catalogs. I built this as a "city bike". straight bars, hammered fenders, and a mix of Campy components with Paul brake levers.. very smooth !! I have one other Imported Schwinn, I'll post that next week..

Week # 30,
A number of weeks ago, I posted my 58cm 60th Anniversary Schwinn Paramount. This is the big brother of that one. This is a 60cm 60th Anniversary. Lots of controversy over these frames from the "true" Paramount fans as these were made by Tim Isaac of "Match Bicycles". And, after the family owned Schwinn company was sold.. Saying that, I have a very high opinion of these frames.. This was my daily trainer for many years and has a ton of miles.. and as many scratches and chips .. Outfitted with Shimano Ultegra 6500.. Not always a big fan of Shimano, but this stuff is over 20 years old and has held up well... Another strange fact about these, the actual 60th Anniversary for the Paramount would have been 1998 as the first Paramounts were built in 1938.. These frames had a 3 year run, 1998 -2000, and each year wore 60th anniversary decals. ????

It's been a few weeks since my last post.. Week # 29.. Here's a pretty nice 1968 Paramount Deluxe.. Original goodness on this bike. Original paint and components. (Except those I swapped out to make it a bit more ride-able). Chrome is in great shape and has a great color.. This frame is a bit small for me, so I swapped out the Cinelli drop bars for a set of "British touring bars.. I also put a Brooks B17 on it, swapping out the Unicantor.. and, topped it off with a set of Berthoud fenders.. Also, I'm not a Brooks saddle bag expert, but i believe the seat bag is from the same era.. Not the lightest bike, but very smoooooth...
