Malana asked Dr. Hoover a simple question: what does Tai Chi teach you that has nothing to do with the form itself? His answer wasn't about movement at all — it was about noticing the stress we're carrying all the time.

The hunched shoulders. The urge to speed up.

Tai Chi just slows things down enough to see it. And once you see it, you start noticing it everywhere else too.

Dr. Hoover's advice to himself before he started Tai Chi: stick with it. It keeps getting better.

Not just your form, your nervous system, your balance, your posture, your health, all of it.

"How long does it really take to learn Tai Chi?"

Dr. Hoover breaks down the difference between memorizing a form (as fast as 30 days with focus and a good instructor) and actually embodying the principles, which is closer to a lifetime practice. In SOHMA's program, students typically reach a minimal level of proficiency in 6 to 10 months of consistent practice.

Curious what "proficiency" really means?

Teaching Tai Chi around the world, Dr. Hoover hears the same question often.

Which form should I start with?

His view: the style matters less than the practice. At a recent masterclass in Italy, he watched that idea confirmed in real time, a Chen style student taking her first Yang style class, her form carrying the fundamentals through.

Dr. Hoover was taught by Master Hank Horvath that you should be able to run through your Tai Chi 24 form katas anywhere, even in a bathtub.

It's a lesson in adaptability: your practice shouldn't depend on having the perfect space. If you can move with intention in small quarters, you can move with intention anywhere. This one's dedicated to Master Horvath.

One of Dr. Hoover's favorite memories: teaching Sunday Tai Chi at Heartwell Park with his baby in a carrier on his chest the whole class. Tai Chi or not, having family along for the ride makes the memory.
