This sums up with most don’t understand! Lowest division vs Top divisions….Athletic Scholarships!
One of the most important factors in earning a full athletic scholarship out of highschool is understanding that “Iron Sharpens Iron”. Statistics are great but can be skewed based on the competition level. I have watched kids work hard and receive many accolades but never earn a full athletic scholarship. Why do these kids not make it?
In sports it’s all about the level of the competition to prove if you really have what it takes to play against the best. If you are playing against lower competition, you are expected to completely dominate the game. I have seen kids earn full athletic scholarships that weren’t even starters on their HS team. Being surrounded by teammates that really challenge you for playing time is great for sharpening iron. Going hard against good kids in practice is what maximizes one’s potential.
“If you are the best player in the gym, you need to find a new gym”. We all invest plenty of money and time into our kids athletics. At some point in time it’s not about having fun but more so about business and opportunity. I think this switch in mindset should happen once a kid reaches the varsity level in highschool. You learn to be very critical of yourself down to the smallest details aiming for perfection. That drive for perfection is what makes an athlete very competitive against any level competition.
To sum it all up:
If you have never played or been successful against the kids earning full athletic scholarships, you are a very hard kid to evaluate. I advise upping your competition level so you can put out better film for recruiters to evaluate.
How is someone suppose to offer you a scholarship if all they see is you beating up on lesser competition? They want to see what you do against iron. You also have to dominate at camps against kids that are being recruited. This is where your skills are put to the test in front of coaches that can offer you a scholarship...........
