The Batey-Bould Trail System is a series of interconnected loops that provide 40 miles of motorcycle (single track) routes. Numerous bridges and puncheons travel across creeks and seeps. The Tacoma Peak Trail #309 and Boulder Mountain Trail #311 loops offer a number of steep climbs and descents for advanced riders. The Batey-Bould Trail #306 links to the 45-mile Little Pend Oreille Motorized Trail System. View the Pend Oreille River Valley from Tacoma Peak and Boulder Mountain loops and visit the Uptagraph Homestead Site on Batey-Bould Trail #306. The terrain in this motorcycle trail system ranges from meadows to mountain peaks. Even though the trail system is motorized, it provides varied terrain for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The trails see less motorized use on weekdays.

Clocking in at less than three miles, the Springboard Trail winds up to a viewing platform overlooking Lake Thomas. There are typically quite a few downed trees to navigate but think of it as maintaining your range of motion! The trail head is located at the east end of the Gillette Campground, which opens Memorial Day weekend. If you visit before then, you can park outside the gate and walk in to the trail head at the east end of the campground.

Potter’s Pond is a small, 15-acre gem of a lake tucked into the Little Pend Oreille Wildlife Refuge. The pond, with it’s stocked rainbow trout, nearby campsites, and an accessible fishing dock is great for the whole family. There is a short, ADA-accessible paved pathway that leads to the fishing dock. Bait fishing is allowed, and anglers can catch native redband rainbow and west-slope cutthroat trout, as well as introduced brown and brook trout. See a link in the comments for maps and information.

The Long Lake Trail #5 is 1.8 mile, easy hike around the shore through a dirt path and multiple talus slopes. The gentle trail around the lake has only a 30-foot elevation change overall. Parts of the trail can be slippery when wet. A good walking stick would be advisable. Long Lake is a popular fishing spot, fly fishing only, no motorized boats. You can also fish from many places along the trail. Fry-planted Cutthroat Trout should yield some 9-17-inch catches, especially by fall. Beavers, loons and other wildlife can often be observed around the lake. Parking is available at the boat launch parking lot, or if you’re staying at the campground nearby. Both ends of the trail are accessible near site #5 in the campground. For more information and maps, please visit https://newashingtontrails.com/Long-Lake/.

The Sherman Creek Point Loop Trail is a fun one to hike or bike for the whole family! Start the adventure at the old Mellenberger Bridge, just west of Kettle Falls along Hwy 20. The trail takes you through an area protected by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, and you have a very good chance of spotting wildlife, including white-tailed and mule deer, which are fed here during the winter months. There are many trail distance options here, but always some beautiful scenery. The Reed Slide Overlook is a popular spot along the trail, and you'll also find picnic tables to enjoy a little lunch. You'll need your Discover Pass to park here. Find a map location at: https://bit.ly/3IQNU6h

The Elk Creek Trail #560 has it all- winding trails through dark, quiet cedar groves, foot bridges, alpine meadows filled with seasonal wildflowers, expansive views of the valley and beyond and, did I mention a beautiful waterfall? The entire trail is only about 2.5 miles long, although it does have a moderate elevation gain. It's worth the gentle climb to reach the falls. Even in mid-July when these photos were taken the falls were robust. Catch the trail either from the Mill Pond Historic Site, or, if you happen to be camping at the Mill Pond Campground, a trail at the north end of the campground intersects with the Elk Creek Trail. Keep this trail in mind for a gorgeous spring hike.

The Mission Point Trail in Kettle Falls, Washington is a short, less than 1/2 mile, stroll through generations of history. The trail will lead you through stands of Ponderosa pine to the Sharpening Stone, which is set on a bluff overlooking where the falls once roared before being hidden underneath Lake Roosevelt. You'll see where Fort Colvile [sic] once stood, a small cemetery and more. If you visit when the neighboring Kettle Falls Historical Center is open, you may even get to have a knowledgeable guide join you on your walk.

The Snow Peak Trail #10 is the shortest access to the Snow Peak Cabin (available by reservation at recreation.gov) in the summer. It is about a 2.7-mile moderate hike to where this trail intersects with the Kettle Crest #13 Trail. Head south at the junction and you're not too far from the cabin. The trail winds through the still-visible burn scars and standing dead trees from the 1988 White Mountain Fire. This is an excellent trail for wildflowers in the summer, as the trail mostly follows a south-facing ridgeline. This trail does not cross any water, so be sure and bring some along for your canine hiking buddy. During their peak season, huckleberries are plentiful as you go up in elevation, just remember bears might like this trail for that very reason. Always carry bear spray with you! The long views you'll enjoy on this trail is well worth it. For maps and more information, please visit https://newashingtontrails.com/snow-peak-trail/.
