While big sis was doing some physical therapy; I got in a little workout with lil sis.
➡️ People often ask when should my athlete start strength training?
I believe you should start with body weight & movement training as soon as they are participating in sports.
Gymnastics, dance, soccer — young children can start those as toddlers, and they build a great foundation!
As far as structured training — this little one here started doing movement, bodyweight, speed & agility training with me by the time she was 6 — she wanted to do it with big sis ♥️
Research indicates ages 8-11 are the best times to start speed, agility and movement training — and of course, adding some body weight exercises.
By 12 -14 ; due to the changes in girls bodies they definitely should be in some sort of structured strength training regimen — especially if participating in sports — to counteract repetitive movements and stay healthy.
WITH the focus on:
• FORM
• Joint Integrity
• Muscular Balance
• HOW to MOVE properly
You’ll notice in this video I’m correcting her — using her own body weight.
TRX suspension training is even used by pro athletes.
Yes, I’m aware of and coached her on the knee valgus in her broad jump.
Most people cannot do a push-up, pull-up, plank, bodyweight squat properly —- so there is no need to start lifting a bunch of heavy weight until the foundations are in place.
Too often we want to skip from addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division straight to calculus when it comes to youth athletes….
There are a lot of factors to consider, but again I believe by the age of 12 — girls should start transitioning into some sort of strength training regimen to support their body in sports.
That’s why I include sample body weight workouts, in all my mindset workbooks that are suitable for elementary, middle school, and high school students to get started!
