I almost didn’t ask my question last night.
I attended Let’s Talk: Conversations That Create Change, hosted by Teresa Hanna of Step Forward LLC, and I was perfectly content being in the audience.
I typically don't like to take up space just because I’m in a room. Sometimes I genuinely want to sit, listen, learn, and let somebody else hold the mic. But when the floor opened for questions, Teresa kept looking my way. 😂 And I did have a question.
I asked the panelists how we help educators move beyond deficit thinking about children, families, and communities. Whew. That question took us somewhere.
Before I knew it, people were asking me questions too. We talked about teacher burnout, educators leaving classrooms, class size, expectations, and some of what I’ve been seeing in schools.
Then someone in the audience offered a challenge: we cannot focus so much on what is wrong with schools that we forget to focus on what we can change. I’ve been thinking about that ever since. Because I believe both things can be true. We need spaces safe enough to tell the truth about what isn’t working. AND we need spaces hopeful enough to imagine what could.
That is one of the things I appreciate most about psychological safety. Safety isn’t the absence of disagreement or discomfort. Sometimes the safest rooms are the ones where we can challenge one another, reconsider our thinking, and still remain connected to the work and to each other.
At the end of the evening, we were asked to identify one thing we would change. One person committed to going to therapy after hearing a panelist vulnerably share part of her own story. That stayed with me.
The right people were in the room last night.
People doing the work.
People willing to listen.
People willing to be challenged.
People humble enough to know that change might have to begin with us.
I made some genuine connections tonight, and I’m excited to see what grows from them.
Thank you to Teresa Hannah, Dr. Paul Davis, Felicia A. Saunders, and everyone who helped create the space. 🤎
