My Statement: As a dedicated archery hunter, there are a few things I always and never do.

My Response: Unlikely, since always and never are probably two of the most misused words in the English lexicon.

The reason I bring this up is a year ago, I climbed into my stand with my safety harness on, which I ALWAYS wear, (unless I forget it) to do some bow hunting. Oh yah, I also stopped to get gas on the way, which I NEVER do when deer hunting, (unless of course I need gas because I was too lazy to get it the night before). Ok, back to the stand, whenever I get into my stand, here are things I always do, I get strapped in, nock an arrow, hang my bow and pack on hooks and put on my release, (unless I forget it, then I just go home). Once I get settled in, I ALWAYS draw my bow at least once.
Well, here’s where the story takes a turn, this time, instead of hanging my bow, I laid it across my lap and I didn’t do a practice draw, which, if you remember from earlier, I ALWAYS do!

About an hour and a half into my hunt, I saw the extremely wide buck I was hunting heading straight for me, so, I hooked my release on my bow and stood up. The buck started hitting a scrape about 20 yards in front of me. When the buck put his head down, I drew my bow to settle my 20 yard pin on his vitals and to my surprise, I couldn’t find my peep sight. I looked down and realized my release had twisted my string loop, I had attached my release upside down on my loop and when I lifted my bow, it caused it to twist. I tried to let down and the release let go and the arrow flew above his back, (at least I didn’t wound him).

So, here’s the point or tip, you can try to ALWAYS do things a certain way but inevitably you’ll screw up, learn from it, embrace it, laugh about it, and NEVER do it again!!

By the way, my wife told me that there is definitely a time when always and never are consistent, she stated when we have a “disagreement “ she’s ALWAYS right and I NEVER am. (I really love her input).

Nebraska archery season is officially underway!

If big game is on your radar this fall, here are the 2026 Nebraska archery season dates to know:

Deer: Sept. 1 – Dec. 31
Antelope: Aug. 20 – Dec. 31
Elk – Bull: Sept. 1 – Oct. 31 & Dec. 16 – 31

Whether you’re already in the field or still getting your gear dialed in, there’s plenty of season ahead. Check your equipment, know your permit and unit regulations, and make every shot count.

Yes, I know it’s September and this tip should probably be all about hunting, but it’s not, so get over it. Actually, I had an entirely different tip for this month and then my mind was changed by an extremely impatient and idiotic driver. This got me to thinking about the virtue of patience and how it is disappearing in this society.

Here are a few examples: our phones give us instant information, no more going to the library or grabbing an “encyclopedia”, (everyone reading this that’s 20 or younger can google encyclopedia to see what it is), ok, that might be a cheap shot but it’s pretty true. Our phones let us call someone on a whim, no more waiting until you get home or find a “pay phone”, (go ahead and google payphone). Fast food, instant coffee, and your vehicle tells you instantly how to get somewhere, no more “fold out maps”, (yes, google again) you used to have to know how to read a map to get places.

I like to believe I’m a patient person but the thing that really test my patience is drivers on their phones at stop lights, you all know who you are, so get your heads out of your “phones” and pay attention, (you all thought I was going to say something different there, didn’t you)?

So, here is where hunting and fishing come into this article, both activities teach you how to be patient, without patience you’re not going to be very good at either endeavor. So, grab your kids at an early age, turn the phones off and get a fishing pole, gun, bow or slingshot in their hands and get out there and teach some patience. It’s a virtue that’s definitely worth saving.

Hi, Dudley here. Back for this summer's "tip." My family consists of my wife, two daughters, two son-in-laws, two grandchildren and my son. All of my kids have graduated college and my two daughters are in the medical field and my son is in Law Enforcement. I absolutely cherish the time with my entire family and even though they all live in the Lincoln area, getting everyone together at the same time and place can be a daunting task. So, that being said, we were able to get everyone together a couple of weekends ago for an early supper and then we headed to a local pond to do some fishing.

Between college, weddings, grandkids, graduations and new jobs, it had been several years since we had all fished together. One of the reasons I wanted to get together was so my 4 year old grandson could catch some fish and with the help of some minnows, he was able to catch a few. Now, these were not the first fish he had caught but these were special because my entire family was there to share the memories.

The biggest surprise was the interest my two year old granddaughter took in fishing since the last time she was around fish, she basically freaked out and wanted nothing to do with it. Then, my middle daughter advised me she was trying to catch a fish so she could let my granddaughter reel it in, at this point I was all in and doing whatever I could to make that happen. After a short period, my daughter caught a small bass, reeled it in, had me check to see that it was hooked good and proceeded to return the fish back to the water, still hooked. She called to my granddaughter and my little two year old reeled that fish in like a pro. So now, it was picture time and I told her I would hold it for her but to my surprise, she latched right onto that fish with the biggest smile ever. I was one proud grandpa!!

So, as the title says, “Hook Em” anyway you can to get them outside to spend time, and fishing as a family is about as good as it gets, pack some drinks, a few snacks or sandwiches and make a day of it. You will make some lifelong memories. May you have a safe and Blessed summer.
