Hi, Dudley here. Back for this summer's "tip." My family consists of my wife, two daughters, two son-in-laws, two grandchildren and my son. All of my kids have graduated college and my two daughters are in the medical field and my son is in Law Enforcement. I absolutely cherish the time with my entire family and even though they all live in the Lincoln area, getting everyone together at the same time and place can be a daunting task. So, that being said, we were able to get everyone together a couple of weekends ago for an early supper and then we headed to a local pond to do some fishing.

Between college, weddings, grandkids, graduations and new jobs, it had been several years since we had all fished together. One of the reasons I wanted to get together was so my 4 year old grandson could catch some fish and with the help of some minnows, he was able to catch a few. Now, these were not the first fish he had caught but these were special because my entire family was there to share the memories.

The biggest surprise was the interest my two year old granddaughter took in fishing since the last time she was around fish, she basically freaked out and wanted nothing to do with it. Then, my middle daughter advised me she was trying to catch a fish so she could let my granddaughter reel it in, at this point I was all in and doing whatever I could to make that happen. After a short period, my daughter caught a small bass, reeled it in, had me check to see that it was hooked good and proceeded to return the fish back to the water, still hooked. She called to my granddaughter and my little two year old reeled that fish in like a pro. So now, it was picture time and I told her I would hold it for her but to my surprise, she latched right onto that fish with the biggest smile ever. I was one proud grandpa!!

So, as the title says, “Hook Em” anyway you can to get them outside to spend time, and fishing as a family is about as good as it gets, pack some drinks, a few snacks or sandwiches and make a day of it. You will make some lifelong memories. May you have a safe and Blessed summer.

This tip is a little later in the month than I was planning, but I had to cool down some before I started writing. I was bored to death about a week ago and was flipping through some “Reels” for entertainment when I came across someone interviewing a few of the Archery Industries’ “influential” people. Not sure how “influential” they are since I hadn’t heard of any of them but the point is they were asked, “what’s your maximum comfortable range”? I was absolutely flabbergasted by the answers, expecting to hear numbers like 30, maybe 35 to 40 under the right conditions. What I heard made me both sad and extremely angry at the same time, the shortest distance was 50 yards and the longest was, are you sitting down?, 120 yards, with several subjects proclaiming 100 yards as “their” maximum distance. One subject even advised he had pins out to 150 yards, so… I calmed down and assumed they were talking about shooting targets, nope, they were advocating shooting deer at these ranges.

You can’t tell, but I had to take a pause. I started getting mad all over again just writing this. Either these “hunters” are in some kind of idiotic competition or they just don’t understand both the anatomy and athleticism of a deer. We once spoke about a 30 yard shot being questionable because of how fast a deer can “JUMP” the string. How freaking far do you think a deer can move in the time it takes for an arrow to travel 100 yards? There’s also some indication that the deer can actually hear the arrow as it’s in flight! Oh, I know the rationalization will be that bows are so much faster now, but actually, they are not. I’m dang sure they aren’t three times as fast as they were twenty years ago.

Here’s another take on this whole subject, how bad of a hunter are you, if you can’t get closer to a deer than 100 yards. If that’s the case, hang up your bow and learn to be a woodsman before you disrespect another deer by taking a 100 yard shot. That deer deserves better and you all know it, if not, stop calling yourself an archery hunter and pick up a rifle. Hell, you can probably maximize your range to one mile with a modern rifle.

So, here’s my “Tip”, to all you true archery hunters out there, continue to see how close you can get that deer before you let loose an arrow and maybe consider not giving these “influencers” any attention. Thanks for reading and GOD BLESS!
