The isometric clean and press is one of the most underrated tools for building a stronger overhead especially for strongman athletes, but it carries over to anyone serious about strength.
In this setup, the lifter starts with an empty barbell and presses into the pins at lockout for 8 seconds. This isn’t about moving weight it’s about producing maximum force against an immovable object. That sustained effort teaches the body how to recruit more muscle fibers, reinforce stability, and build confidence in the most demanding part of the lift: the lockout.
Immediately after, the lifter transitions to a loaded bar at about 60% of their max and performs a clean and press. This is where everything comes together. The nervous system is primed from the isometric, allowing for more explosive ex*****on while reinforcing proper technique. You’re not just lifting you’re teaching your body how to move efficiently under fatigue and tension.
For strongman competitors, this directly translates to better overhead event performance. But for powerlifters, Olympic lifters, and general strength athletes, it’s just as valuable. You can modify the movement adjust the pins, change the percentage, or swap the implement to fit your sport.
The key is intent. Max effort on the isometric. Controlled aggression on the dynamic work.
If your lockout is weak, your overhead feels unstable, or you struggle to transfer power from the clean into the press this is a tool you should be using.
Train smart. Train with purpose.
