The isometric clean and press is one of the most underrated tools for building a stronger overhead especially for strongman athletes, but it carries over to anyone serious about strength.

In this setup, the lifter starts with an empty barbell and presses into the pins at lockout for 8 seconds. This isn’t about moving weight it’s about producing maximum force against an immovable object. That sustained effort teaches the body how to recruit more muscle fibers, reinforce stability, and build confidence in the most demanding part of the lift: the lockout.

Immediately after, the lifter transitions to a loaded bar at about 60% of their max and performs a clean and press. This is where everything comes together. The nervous system is primed from the isometric, allowing for more explosive ex*****on while reinforcing proper technique. You’re not just lifting you’re teaching your body how to move efficiently under fatigue and tension.

For strongman competitors, this directly translates to better overhead event performance. But for powerlifters, Olympic lifters, and general strength athletes, it’s just as valuable. You can modify the movement adjust the pins, change the percentage, or swap the implement to fit your sport.

The key is intent. Max effort on the isometric. Controlled aggression on the dynamic work.

If your lockout is weak, your overhead feels unstable, or you struggle to transfer power from the clean into the press this is a tool you should be using.

Train smart. Train with purpose.

One of my least favorite exercises for improving the deadlift is the rack pull.

A lot of lifters love rack pulls because they can load the bar with huge amounts of weight and feel strong. The problem is that the movement often becomes less about building a bigger deadlift and more about creating an artificial version of the lift.

When you set the bar on pins inside a rack, the bar bends significantly before the plates even leave the supports. This creates a level of bar whip that you simply don’t get in competition. The result is a much shorter range of motion and a more advantageous starting position that can dramatically inflate your numbers.

I’ve personally seen lifters rack pull 700 pounds but struggle to deadlift 500 pounds from the floor. That’s not because they’re weak…it’s because the exercise has become so different from the actual competition movement that the carryover is limited.

If your goal is to build a stronger deadlift, I believe block pulls are a much better option. With block pulls, the plates are supported by blocks instead of metal pins, which helps reduce excessive bar bend. The weight feels more balanced, the setup is more realistic, and the movement pattern stays much closer to what you’ll experience on the platform.

Specificity matters. The closer your training exercise resembles the competition lift, the more likely it is to improve your performance when it counts. While rack pulls may have a place in certain situations, I think most powerlifters and strongman athletes would be better served by using block pulls when they want to overload the top portion of the deadlift.

Train hard, but make sure the exercises you’re choosing actually build the lift you’re trying to improve.

HAILEY SQUATS 528lbs! My client came in, LAST MINUTE, and hoisted a heavy attempt and to her BEST DEPTH! She went on to finish the day solid with bench and deadlift, but I was so impressed by how well she handled this squat. She’s got the ability to lift 600…just wait :)
