While Derick has been coaching with us for a little while now, he’s recently stepped into a larger role and we’re excited to have him even more involved in the day-to-day at the gym.

Derick is a CrossFit Level 3 Trainer, an accomplished Olympic weightlifter, and the current Masters World Record holder in both the sn**ch and total. Beyond his athletic accomplishments, he brings an incredible attention to detail, technical expertise, and a passion for helping athletes improve at every level.

Currently pursuing his PhD in Exercise Science, Derick combines high-level coaching experience with an evidence-based approach to training and performance.

You’ll see Derick coaching classes, working with athletes one-on-one, and providing personalized programming throughout the gym.

We’re incredibly excited to have Derick on the team and can’t wait for our community to learn from one of the best.

Welcome to the next chapter, Derick.

Today, Coach Kali continues our private training series and talks about how one-on-one coaching can remove the uncertainty that keeps so many people from getting started. Instead of wondering if you’re doing the movements correctly or following the right program, you get a coach focused entirely on your goals, your movement patterns, and your progress.

Whether you’re looking to transition into group classes, improve technique, return from time away from training, or simply want a personalized approach, private training provides a roadmap and accountability every step of the way.

At CrossFit Grandview and Grandview Barbell, private coaching has become one of the biggest parts of our business because it works. Better movement. Faster progress. More confidence. Better long-term results.

Check out Kali’s thoughts and reach out if you’d like to learn more about our private training options.

This past weekend we had two teams take on the Syndicate Crown Semifinal in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Team CrossFit Grandview finished 22nd and Team CrossFit Grandview Black finished 31st in a world-class field loaded with some of the best teams on the planet.

Team CrossFit Grandview — Jordan Reichert, Kali Schierl, Troy Clay, and Caroline Dardini — put together an incredible year of training. Jordan and Kali continue to find their stride as competitors, gaining experience and confidence every season. Troy is still climbing the ladder and has been an awesome addition to our community this year. And Caroline? She’s basically superwoman. More than a decade into her competitive career, we keep talking her out of retirement so she can come play with us and qualify for huge events like this.

Team CrossFit Grandview Black — Drake Stephens, Heather Paye, Chris Paye, and Rachel Escolas — represented everything we love about affiliate-based competition. Two parents. Three masters athletes. Going head-to-head with professional athletes from around the world. Watching a mom handstand walk up the ramp and a soon-to-be father of two grind through fatigued 315-pound squat cleans is what makes this sport special. Heather and Chris continue to get stronger, fitter, and more competitive every single year, which is incredible to witness.

What makes me most proud isn’t where we placed.

It’s how we do it.

When the rules changed, we didn’t. We stayed committed to the same system we’ve believed in for years. Our Level 2 athletes train in classes. They develop alongside the community. They coach here. They work here. They’re members here. They’re not flown in from somewhere else. They’re part of the fabric of this gym.

It feels right.

Old-school affiliate CrossFit.

Still getting it done in 2026.

This year’s Murph was one of our best yet.

Nearly 200 athletes came together across 6 heats to honor Lt. Michael Murphy and the men and women who have served our country. From first-time Murph finishers to longtime veterans of the workout, the energy all morning was incredible.

We were blessed with perfect weather, an amazing breakfast from Shack, face painting and games for the kids, and a facility packed with friends, families, and community.

Every year this event continues to grow, and this year was no exception. Plenty of PRs were set, countless first Murphs were completed, and memories were made that will last far longer than sore legs and tired arms.

Thank you to everyone who came out, volunteered, cheered, and helped make this such a special day. We’re already looking forward to next year.

📸 Photos are now posted on the CrossFit Grandview page!

Murph season ends… summer training starts.

One thing we’ve learned after 17 years: people don’t stay healthy, motivated, and improving by hammering the same thing year-round.

Training should have seasons.

Our new 12-week Summer Cycle starts this week and is built to widen the funnel after a spring heavily focused on Murph prep, running, and conditioning.

For the first 8 weeks we’ll rebuild strength in our foundational lifts while still keeping all the things people love about training this time of year:
• More outdoor workouts
• Running
• Carries & sleds
• Gymnastics
• Variety

The final 4 weeks become what I’ve always called our “CrossFit.com phase.” More fun. More broad fitness. Heavy testing days return so we can establish percentages and head into our annual Fall Strength Cycle prepared.

Because fitness isn’t built in one cycle.

It’s built by stacking years of training, shifting focus when needed, staying healthy, and continuing to show up.

That’s how people are still progressing here after 5…10…15+ years.

Summer starts now.
