"The fight for women's college sports in the 1960s reflected battles across the country for racial and gender equality. Congress responded to the national debate and passed laws like the 1965 Civil Rights Act, guaranteeing minorities and underrepresented groups equal access to education and employment. Those guarantees were enhanced further by Title IX, the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, signed into law by President Richard Nixon on June 23, 1972:
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of s*x, be excluded from participatin in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
