Sanskrit is among the most precisely engineered languages ever created — a living sound-map of the human body. Chanting it clarifies, focuses, and uplifts our consciousness and spirit. Tibetan Buddhists chant it three times as a way of apologizing for any mistakes that may have been made in pronunciation and intention during their chanting of scripture. It also serves as a vocal preparation — bringing the mouth into readiness before any sacred recitation.

This summer, join Venus for an online Summer Sanskrit Series to explore the varṇamālā, the Sanskrit syllabary, through chanting, pronunciation practice, and an introduction to both Roman transliteration (with diacritics) and the beautiful Devanāgarī script.

No prior Sanskrit knowledge is required — only curiosity and a willingness to listen deeply. Many of the sounds you already know from your yoga practice will come alive with new clarity and meaning; for examples, prāṇa, dharma, cakra, asana. Come discover why Sanskrit is called deva-bhāṣā — the language of the gods — through direct experience of its resonance in the body.

Each Sunday evening class builds on the last, culminating in a full recitation of the syllabary. We will close, time permitting, with a short verse from a beloved Sanskrit poem.

➡️ PLEASE NOTE: This class meets for 5 Sundays with no drop-ins. There will be *no class* on Sunday *August 9*
➡️ DATES FOR CLASS: July 19, 26 and August 2, 16, and 23

Free your voice on the summer solstice!

If you've ever been shy about using your voice to chant the universal sound in a yoga class, this is a workshop to explore the connections between your breath, your body and your voice *without judgement.* On Sunday, June 21st, join Madeline for Finding Om: Myofascial Release and your Voice to explore using self-myofascial release techniques in combination with breathwork to release excess tension patterns that influence and inhibit free-flowing breath and liberated sound. Feel the evolution of your voice throughout the practice and enjoy the calming benefits of creating your own good vibes!

This workshop is suitable for all levels, all bodies. All participants will receive a copy of the full sequence. Registered Yoga Teachers may receive 2 CEs upon completion. Sign up on our Workshops page! https://www.columbiayoga.com/workshops

"Strengthen your core to support your lower back." Right. But what exactly is the core and which muscles need to be strengthened? Many people focus on strengthening the outer core, or surface abs, the re**us abdominis. However, core strength depends on the deeper muscles of the inner core – the obliques, transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, and spinal erectors.

Join anatomy and functional movement expert Lucy on Saturday, June 20th, and come experience stability, strength, length, and endurance of these deeper core muscles. In Core Strength for Back Support, learn how deep core strength helps protect the vulnerable lower back muscles.

This will be an active workshop including poses for upper body strength, arm balances, and plank-type moves, as well as yoga poses with core and strengthening emphasis. It is appropriate for those with at least 1 year of yoga experience. Take home a handout of the poses covered so that you may continue your practice at home! Yoga Teachers receive 2 CEs with Yoga Alliance upon completion. Register on our Workshops page!

Next month, on Saturday and Sunday, July 11th and 12th, engage with ancient myths of yoga philosophy and learn how to instill their lessons into your daily life in Myth, Mantra, Mudra, and Meditation with the YCC's Director, Kelly!

Ta***ic yoga practice employs myth, mantra, and mudra in addition to meditation on the deities in order to gain greater insight into oneself and the world around us. Allegory and awareness of different mythological characters allow us to reflect, categorize, focus, and employ techniques to understand and cope with challenges and emotions in your life and improve your relationships with others.

Join us for this highly experiential, retreat-like weekend that will include:
➡️ Yoga asana practice
➡️ Meditating on the characters as aspects of one's consciousness
➡️ Chanting based on the myths
➡️ Learning the stories and the symbolism behind the characters
➡️ Incorporating mythic themes into your teaching

We will also contemplate how energies manifest in one’s own life and engage in small group discussion to integrate concepts into practice. Upon successful completion of this training, RYT teachers receive 12 CEs with Yoga Alliance, but this weekend retreat-like training is open to all. Join Lucy Lomax at Yoga Center of Columbia for an upcoming Ever Practical Yoga workshop designed to help you better understand what true core strength really means—and how it supports a healthier back.

Many people think the core is just the abdominals, but lasting back support comes from deeper stabilizing muscles that help the spine move safely and efficiently. In this workshop, Lucy will guide you through yoga-based strengthening and mobility practices that build support from the inside out.

You’ll learn how coordinated core engagement can reduce unnecessary strain on the lower back, improve posture, and create more confidence in everyday movement.

Hosted at Yoga Center of Columbia, this workshop is available both in-studio and online, making it easy to join in the way that works best for you.
