In 2008, Columbia Roller Derby faced Charlotte Roller Derby in front of a crowd so packed it almost feels unreal looking back at the photos now. The energy, the community, the passion for this sport...it helped build the foundation for everything we are today.
This weekend, 18 years later, we take the track against Charlotte once again in the 2026 WFTDA North America Playoffs – South Carolina.
And somehow, in the middle of this full-circle moment, one piece of that original story is still here: Holly Hunter. From that 2008 Columbia team to now representing us in playoffs nearly two decades later…that kind of dedication is hard to put into words.
Regional playoffs only happen every other year. For us, this moment represents two years of hard work, sacrifice, bruises, long nights, and commitment from every single person on this team. We practice twice a week, and many of our skaters drive over an hour each way just to be here. They choose this team over and over again because of the love they have for this sport and for each other.
No matter what happens this weekend, this team has already accomplished something special. We are proud to carry the history of Columbia Roller Derby onto the track while writing the next chapter of it ourselves.
Here’s to the past, the present, and the moments that remind us why we fell in love with roller derby in the first place. 🖤

I want to be a Charlotte Roller Girl. While watching their inaugural bout against the Columbia Quad Squad last night at Cricket Arena, I could...
