🥋🏆 THE TROPHIES ARE GREAT… BUT THE GROWTH IS EVEN BETTER!

What a day at our Capital Karate In-School Tournament!

One of my favorite things about competition is watching students discover what they're capable of when they're challenged.

Some stepped onto the mat nervous. Others discovered a competitive fire they didn't know they had. And some are already thinking about what they want to accomplish next!

That's why competition matters!

I want our students setting BIG goals, working hard to achieve them, and learning that setbacks aren't failures. They're opportunities to get better!

That's also why I'm excited about the future of Team Columbia. I want more students discovering a love for competition and pushing themselves to accomplish things they never thought possible.

To everyone who competed, I'm proud of you!

Don't let that trophy be the finish line. Let it be the starting line for your NEXT goal! 👊🏆

Happy Columbus Day. 🥋

Today marks setting out without knowing what's on the other side.

Your child does a smaller version of that whenever they walk into a room where they don't know anybody and don't know what they're doing yet. That's exactly what a first martial arts class is.

Most kids come out of it braver than they expected to be.

No school today — what's the plan in your house?

Every adult who walks through the door at Capital Karate is doing something most people talk themselves out of. 🙏

Martial arts gives you back the feeling of getting measurably better at something, which is rarer after thirty than anyone admits.

Thank you for choosing us. If you've felt it, tell somebody.

It's World Mental Health Day.

Children rarely say they're struggling. It shows up as a short fuse, a sore stomach on a school morning, or a kid gone quiet in a room they used to run around.

If you get a 'nothing' the first time you ask, don't leave it there. Try again later, side by side instead of face to face — in the car, on a walk, doing the dishes. That's usually when it comes out.

And give them somewhere their body has a job to do. For a lot of children, martial arts is the thing that finally quiets their head.

Most families come to Capital Karate for the self-defense. They stay for what martial arts does everywhere else. 🥋

A child who has learned to listen the first time, wait their turn and finish what they started doesn't leave that on the mat. It goes to school with them on Monday.

Teachers notice it before anybody.

Not many jobs let you watch somebody become a different person. 🙏

Martial arts grows confidence in anybody who keeps turning up. Some arrive with none at all. Some arrive already sure of themselves and find there's another level.

Thank you for making Capital Karate the room it is. If you know somebody sitting on the fence, tell them. It's worth it.

The urge to stop turns up long before your actual limit. That gap is where martial arts builds mental toughness.

1. Count something. Two more, thirty more seconds — a number is easier to finish than a feeling.
2. Change the question. Not "can I keep going" but "can I do one more".
3. Decide before you start. The version of you at minute forty is not the one who should be making the call.

Number three is the one. Toughness is mostly a decision you made earlier.

Respect is the hardest thing to teach a child and the easiest thing to spot when it's finally there. 🥋

You see it when a kid slows down for a partner who's struggling. When they lose and mean it when they say well done. When they treat the youngest student in the room like they matter.

Martial arts is one of the only places a child learns that by doing it rather than being told it.

That's why it sticks.

It's World Teachers' Day. 🙏

Not every great teacher your child has works in a classroom.

The martial arts instructors at Capital Karate learn a child's name before they learn their technique. They notice the quiet one. They stay back the extra five minutes.

What they hand a kid — confidence, self-control, the sense that they're worth something — outlasts anything on a report card.

If one of them has made a difference for your family, say so below. They'll read it.
