Well, the Zionsville Eagles came up a bit short in their quest for a 5A State Football Championship. They took on Nationally ranked Cathedral who’s only loss on the season came to another nationally ranked team. It was a relatively predictable game except the Eagles gave them all they could handle and Cathedral played a flawless game. But that isn’t why I’m writing this post.
My nephew, Carson Wagoner, started and played Safety for the Eagles in that game. He was arguably the best defender on the field for both teams. The announcers sure were impressed- continually calling his name and giving him props for his play the entire game. The Zionsville coach was asked about him after the game and missed a good opportunity to speak about what he did for them this season, so I will do the honors.
Carson Wagoner isn’t a Safety. Hell, he doesn’t even play defense. Well at least he didn’t before this season. He is a quarterback! Yes, the 6’2” 190lb senior is arguably the best QB on the Zionsville Eagles’ roster. This was his opportunity as a senior to lead his team. This is what he has been waiting for his entire youth football career. But, he didn’t get that opportunity.
At the start of the season it was communicated the team would be going a different direction at the QB position. The team, however, had a need at safety. A lot of seniors would have quit. Right then and there. But Carson didn’t. He didn’t like it. He complained a bit. But he moved forward. He bought in! He gave his team all he had. He was being asked to play a position he hadn’t tried in years. “Mom, I haven’t tackled anyone since middle school!”
Carson Wagoner did something for his team that wasn’t directly for his own benefit. He did it for his team. This is how teams over achieve. This is how a 7-5 team plays a team like Cathedral in the state championship and gives them all they can handle. This is fortitude!
Congratulations on an amazing season Carson Wagoner. To the people that matter, we’re all really impressed. Good things lie ahead for you.
