Do we have practice on Labor Day?

Yes, we do for our Prep and Varsity teams!

We have always practiced on Labor Day, except for 2020 (because of COVID closing all the gyms). We've had practice every year since 2005 when our 501(c)3 was in its inaugural year.

WHY DO WE ALWAYS PRACTICE ON A LABOR DAY?

In 2005, on Labor Day, Lindsey (then from Taylors, SC a 2-hour drive from Charlotte) convinced her Dad to drive 2 hours one way to practice. Because it was a Holiday, the excuse of "I have to work" wasn't an option. The background of Lindsey's disability is that she's the middle of 3 sisters, she was injured in a car accident when she was 10 years old that resulted in a spinal cord injury, before the accident, Lindsey, like her sisters, was involved in playing basketball. But after the accident, Lindsey had focused on school and Church things. Fast forward 3 years...Lindsey entered the gym with a hesitant smile and a bit nervous, but she was there. 45 minutes later we were running a drill where the players pushed all the way up and back down the court, her Dad (Paul) was standing against the wall and I asked, "So Dad, do you think she likes it? do you think you'll be back next week?" I was not ready for his response, he replied with watery eyes, "You see that smile on her face? I haven't seen that smile in 3 years, We'll definitely be back next week".

Now Fast forward 3 years (2008-09 season), Lindsey is a senior in high school, the then Rollin' Bobcats won the JV National Championship, undefeated, perfect record for the season, and Lindsey was our team's Captain. She'd go on to play wheelchair basketball at the Alabama Adapted Athletics for 4 years, earned her degree, and now owns her own place and works as a Child Life Specialist at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She's also one of the coaches for the Roger C. Peace Rollin’ Tigers, that won their own Prep National Championship in the spring of 2023! Lindsey also continues to play on our D2 and Women's teams.

That is why we practice on Labor Day πŸ™‚ National Wheelchair Basketball Association
