The snowpack tells a story—you just have to know how to read it. ❄️📖

A snow pit lets us see what’s happening beneath the surface: weak layers, buried crusts, recent storm snow, and how those layers are bonding (or not). Avalanches don’t start on the top—they fail in the layers below.

Understanding the structure of the snowpack helps us make smarter decisions about terrain, timing, and whether today is a green-light day or a turn-around day. Snow pits aren’t about predicting avalanches—they’re about stacking the odds in your favor.

Want to learn how to dig, test, and actually interpret what you’re seeing? Train with experienced guides and build real backcountry judgment. That knowledge can make all the difference when it counts.
