Dan Bullock was just a young kid who had aspirations of becoming a U.S Marine or a Police Officer. At the age of 14, he wanted to serve his country, but he didn’t want to wait another 3 years to meet the minimum required age of enlistment. Dan doctored his birth certificate to read he was 19 years old, headed to his local recruitment station and joined the United States Marine Corps. By December of 1968, the 14-year old graduated boot camp and earned his eagle, globe and anchor. 6 months later, Private First Class Bullock had arrived in the Quang Nam Province of South Vietnam to serve as a rifleman in the war. On June 7th, less than a month in country, the An Hoa Combat Base came under heavy small arms and rocket fire by a company sized element of NVA soldiers that lasted through the night. The outnumbered Marines of 2/5 engaged the enemy forces and held them off for hours. Both sides suffered heavy casualties in the fight. As their rounds began to run low, PFC Bullock made the decision to conduct ammunition runs on foot to resupply his fellow marines so they could continue to hold off the assault. It was during one of his runs that Dan was struck by numerous rounds of machine gun fire. He died instantly. It wasn't until local reporters back home in Brooklyn, New York went to interview his family that they discovered his true age. 15-year old Private First Class Dan Bullock is officially listed as the youngest U.S. casualty of the Vietnam War.

PFC Dan Bullock. KIA June 7th, 1969: 50 years ago this morning.
