Hi Boaters...
First, thanks again for ALL of the emails, notes and letters of support. We're sending those off this week. Much appreciated.
And, as most of you know, we temporarily lost our long-time driver - Michael - to an unfortunate accident earlier this summer when he fell off of the upper platform on one of our trailers. Michael has recovered enough that he can now resume driving for us...and for you. But, again unfortunately, we just had another incident this past weekend with aecond driver who was injured loading a cataraft. In the 13 years of our operating the Coloma Shuttle we have never had any instances of our drivers getting injured...and now we have two.
We have been in discussions with our insurer about these incidents, and I have personally spent a good amount of time touching base with many of you as to what we can do to safely continue bringing inflatable craft - rafts, cats, iks - both to and from the river. The bottom line is that from all of these discussions we have determined that the safest way to load all of our craft - both for our drivers and our riders - is to have all inflatable boats deflated prior to loading them on the platform, and we can no longer have our drivers climb up to the platform to load and secure or unload that gear. That will now be the responsibility of the boat owners/operators themselves.
Our website Terms and Conditions page is being amended, and will now include the following: "Please note that ALL inflatable rafts must be deflated prior to loading them. Also note that our drivers are not allowed to be on the deck to load or unload your gear, and you will need to manage that yourself. We will provide straps for securing your gear."
We recognize that this is a significant change from our current protocols, but we know that as boaters and river recreationalists we can - and will - work together to continue to offer our service to our entire boating community.
Sincerely,
Nate Rangel
