Jessica has over twenty years experience training in traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu. She received the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt) from a grading panel, including Morio Higaonna, while training in South Africa in 2010. Jessica has experience training and competing both in the U.S. In addition to her karate training, Jessica as a mental health professional at the Master's level. She specia
lizes in providing therapy for children with learning and behavior difficulties, such as Asperger's and ADHD. This important combination of experience and expertise has informed Jessica's teaching style and curriculum at The Kobukan. It has provided her with the ability to organize classes in such a way that all individuals can succeed and thrive in the karate dojo. Okinawan's are recognized as having longer lifespans than Americans on average. Certainly a portion of this is due to the cultural perception that health includes remaining active throughout the lifespan. Upon traveling to Okinawa, our instructors witnessed first hand senior citizens playing tennis and exercising daily in community centers. Seniors of the same age would typically be in nursing homes here in the U.S. The physical conditioning within karate practice is just one of the components to living a healthy life. Participation in this class will enable students to develop not only their body, but their mind and spirit as well. Karate is lauded for it's ability to prepare children for life, as it is highly structured and disciplined. The study of karate provides the opportunity for self discovery and the development of self discipline for both children and adults. Students will have the opportunity to participate in traditional conditioning and kata (forms), as well as learning applicable self defense techniques. Besides studying the traditional art of Goju-Ryu, individuals have the opportunity to participate in specialty seminars at The Kobukan. For example, women's self-defense are available as short courses for both current students and non-students of The Kobukan. The Kobukan provides two free Introductory classes to all new students. These introductory classes serve two purposes; the student will be able to learn at their own pace, and the instructor will evaluate learning style and whether or not karate is a good fit for the student.
