Silver Catch - Cast Nets

The cast starts before you throw the net.

A successful cast starts before the net leaves your hands.

Learn to spot the fish, position yourself carefully and time your throw. Knowing when to cast can be just as important as knowing how.

Watch the sequence and see how spotting, positioning and technique come together.

Why doesn't your cast net open properly?

A good cast starts before the net leaves your hands.

The way you gather the net, control the lines and release it can make a big difference in how it spreads.

If your net keeps landing in a tight pile instead of opening up, your throwing technique may be the first thing to review.

Watch the full sequence and compare your technique.

What kills a cast net?

Not salt by itself. Two things are especially hard on it.

Sun. Monofilament breaks down under UV. Dry it in the shade and store it out of direct sunlight.

The bucket. A wet net with fish slime on it, left coiled, is about the worst way to store it. Rinse it, hang it, and let it dry completely before it goes back.

Chain bottom adds one more reason to rinse. Galvanized steel resists corrosion, but repeated saltwater exposure will eventually take its toll.

What’s your routine after a saltwater trip?

Choosing a cast net comes down to three things: radius, mesh, and how you fish.

A larger radius gives you more coverage. It's also more net to load and throw.
Finer mesh holds smaller bait. It also sinks slower.
There's no single best setup. The right combination depends on your bait, your conditions, and how much net you're comfortable handling.
Know the specs. Understand the tradeoffs. Choose what fits your fishing.

What radius and mesh do you throw most, and what are you catching with it?

What does 1.1 lb/ft mean?
That number tells you how much perimeter weight a cast net carries per foot of radius.
So, an 8 ft radius net rated at 1.1 lb/ft carries approximately 8.8 lb of perimeter weight.
More perimeter weight generally pushes toward a faster sink, all else equal. But sink behavior also depends on mesh size, radius, current, depth, construction, and how the net lands.
So don't look at lb/ft as a simple “higher is better” number.
Think about where you're throwing, the current, the bait you're after, and how many throws you'll make.

Know the number. Then choose the net for the conditions.

The bottom matters.

Many traditional cast nets use individual lead weights spaced around the exterior bottom edge.

Silver Catch uses a continuous galvanized steel chain around the full perimeter, with no individual exterior lead weights hanging from the edge.

Current Silver Catch nets carry approximately 1.1 lb of perimeter weight per radius foot.

It’s a different way of building and weighting the bottom of the net. Weight is only one part of how a net behaves. Mesh, radius, material, current, and overall design matter too.

When you compare cast nets, what do you check first: radius, mesh, lb/ft, or how the bottom is built?

Several summers ago, I watched a guy make one of the worst cast net throws I'd ever seen.

I honestly thought, "There's no chance he's catching anything."

A few seconds later, he pulled up a full net of bait.

That was the first time I realized that the net can make just as much of a difference as the person throwing it.

In Australia, chain-bottom cast nets are pretty common. Over here, they're surprisingly hard to find. After using one myself, I understood why so many people prefer them. They open wider, tangle less, and they're much more forgiving if your throw isn't perfect.

That's the reason I started Silver Catch.

I wasn't sure how people would respond, but we've now sold out two summers in a row. Seeing so many anglers enjoy using them has been incredibly rewarding.

We've got new sizes arriving soon.
