Hacky Sack is an activity that is not only fun, social, and something that an individual will only get better at, but is a great way to get in shape or stay in shape. After the recommended dose of stretching and the first serve is tossed, the participant will go through what looks like a complicated dance, keeping the sack in the air with use of any body part except below the elbows. With the lowe
r body being the most commonly utilized, participants will eventually learn to juggle the sack, either bringing their heels inward or outward, by letting it bounce off the top of their feet while they rise up in an upward stomping motion, as well as many other creative tricks and techniques. Some tricks include "the jester," which is when the contestant brings the inside of one their legs inward behind the opposite leg creating a figure four like appearance. Other tricks include stalls, flips, and opening serves such as the ever famous "Chicken Scratch." As crazy as the movements may appear, the participant can take this opportunity to utilize their flexibility that healthy doses of exercise will provide. They will also be receiving excellent cardio conditioning, with healthy rest periods to be taken as needed. The greatest thing about this activity is that one should not feel obligated to break a sweat while doing it. As skating shoes are the recommended footwear, a beginner will gain even more experience wearing tennis shoes, rubber boots, and of course playing bare foot. It's an exciting experience to either spectate or take part in, and we hope to see you this winter at our meetings where we will have high ceilings and room temperatures!
