1. What got you into running?

Like most would say, I was way out of shape. I was at a beach vacation back in July of 2023, and I didn’t like the guy staring back at me in that water mirror. The next morning, 7/4/23, I hopped on the treadmill, where day 1 began.

2. Why did you join BRC?

It’s funny, before joining BRC, I started a small social group, not a running club by any means. We were to meet on a morning out of the week, and put one foot in front of the other. Those that know me would tell you that I’m very passionate. When I commit to something, I give it 110%. So what started as a verbal commitment from my group of family and friends eventually turned into a no-show. I recall having a cooler with iced-over water bottles and electrolyte powder mix and no one to share with. Sad, I know. So I retired that small group and shortly after, I came into contact with, and he might not remember the encounter, but it was Tim Habinak, on a Monday run at Wolf Pen Creek. That was 2024. Fast forward some months later, I mustered enough courage and joined BRC in January of 2025. A big gulp later, and another month went by before I made my debut on a Saturday’s run at Harvey Washbangers. Sadly, I only ran out of there twice (Editor’s note: Harvey Washbangers burned down about a year ago ) . Anyways, joining the BRC was definitely a good decision, I only regret not signing up sooner.

3. If you could share any fact about yourself what would it be?

I love ALL people and getting to know ALL people. I feel like I can talk to anyone about anything. Having a companion or a group running beside me makes the run just feel smoother, at least in my opinion.

1. What got you into running?

I first got into running because I wanted to lose weight. When I began my journey in 2005, I weighed over 200 pounds. I ran intervals and stairs at my local high school. Once I lost the 80+ pounds, running didn’t stick. I lost interest and life got busy. Then, in 2009 I experienced several life changes that affected my mental health in a really negative way. I began running as a way to calm my mind and my anxious feelings. I ran my first 5k in December of 2009 and was hooked. The following year I ran a half marathon and then the next year a full marathon followed by a 50k and then a 50 miler. Somewhere in between all that I ran every race I could including 17 full marathons. At the time it felt like I could never go far enough to get away from my brain. More recently, I was diagnosed with complex PTSD several years ago. I underwent several years of intense therapy and now I have a much more healthy relationship with running. I run now because I want to not because I feel like it's my only lifeline. Establishing this new, healthier relationship with running has been a journey and a challenge but I’ve fallen back in love with it and look forward to running another ultra next year.

2. Why did you join BRC?

When we moved back to College Station in 2018, I knew no one. Where we had lived previously I had been involved in the run club so I thought this would be a great way to make friends and find community. Brazos Runners Club has become just that- my community. The relationships and friendships I’ve formed through this club mean a lot to me and I look forward to coming to run club every week when I can.

3. If you could share any fact about yourself what would it be?

Talking about myself is really hard for me. I'm an introvert and it's not easy to come up with much. If I were to share an off the wall fact in a two truths and a lie-something almost no one knows about me- my go to is usually that I'm a published poet.

Do you like sweating with your friends as much as we do? Then join us for the Millican Summer Trail series.

Starting May 28, First Light Racing hosts, a biweekly 5K, and kids 1 mile fun run every other Thursday through the summer. There’s lots of dirt, sweat and complaining but our favorite part is the free beer after 🍻

This is a fun club race and a great way to get to know some of us in a more laid back setting. It’s also a great into to trail running.

To sign up, visit their site and sign up for the weeks you can come!!
