After this little girl finished her Black Belt test, she stood in front of everyone and read an application letter that she had written herself.

To many people, a Black Belt simply means knowing how to fight. That’s why people often compare Taekwondo with other martial arts and ask which one is stronger or which one can fight better.

But I believe if the value of a martial art can only be proven by how well you can fight, then something truly important is missing.

To me, martial arts should be about much more than teaching a child how to punch or kick. It should slowly build their confidence, shape the way they live, and perhaps even influence the person they become.

More than creating the greatest champion in the world, I hope I can become a mentor in my students’ lives — someone who teaches them to respect others, to confidently step forward when they enter an unfamiliar environment, to think about who they want to become and what kind of life they want to live, and to face failure, setbacks, and challenges with courage.

There may only be one champion.

But a child has an entire lifetime ahead of them.

And that journey is what matters most.

You don’t need a lot of space or equipment. Take a few minutes at home to work on:

🥋 Stretching

🥋 Kicking

🥋 Punching

🥋 Your form (Poomsae)

Even 10–15 minutes of focused practice can help keep your techniques fresh and review what we’ve been working on in class.

What does a 4-year-old actually learn in martial arts? 🥋

At this age, progress isn’t always the perfect kick.

It can be walking onto the mat without Mom or Dad, listening to an instructor, waiting their turn, raising their hand, or simply being willing to try.

Those little moments can be BIG wins for a 3–5 year old.

Small steps turn into big progress. 🥋

One of the biggest things we hear kids say more and more is “I can’t do it.”

As coaches and instructors, our job isn’t to do it for them or make everything easy. We encourage them to try first, make mistakes, ask for help, and try again.

Sometimes they get it on the first try. Sometimes it takes 10 tries. Sometimes it takes a few classes. That’s okay.

The important part is helping them slowly change “I can’t” into “Let me try.”

Those small wins add up, and eventually kids start realizing they’re capable of more than they thought.

🥋 What an incredible experience at the 2026 AAU Taekwondo National Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida! 🇺🇸

We couldn’t be more proud of every one of our athletes who stepped onto the national stage to represent our school. For many of our students, this was their very first national competition, yet they stepped onto the mat with confidence, gave it their all, and even brought home some medals. Most importantly, they gained valuable experience that will help them grow as martial artists.
