Starting at the age of 35, people will start losing an extremely alarming 1-2% of muscle mass per year…

This is NOT normal, it’s a preventable disease called sarcopenia AKA age related muscle loss, that we must proactively work to prevent with structured strength training AND functional hypertrophy work.

To maintain (and start gaining) muscle mass last 35? You need to STOP training like a 20 year old bro bodybuilder wannabe, and start training as intelligently as possible for your current age, goal and ability level.

The reality? Most 35+ year olds have wear, tear and increased milage on their bodies. What you used to do in college will NOT work the same for you today as it did back then (probably sucked back then too).

We must evolve with our growing needs to be a healthy functional human being. And enhance our lives via our health.

And building muscle WITHOUT jeopardizing our health or other physical characteristics that yield optimal longevity is a big piece of the puzzle.

But if you’re confused with this concept of “functional” hypertrophy?

Think Christiano Ronaldo, NOT Ronnie Coleman…

Build a body that’s strong, sexy, muscled, athletic and functional. Not just a pile of meat that can’t move nor maintain its health.

Vanity is GREAT, functionality is BETTER. But why not train to have both? To look and function your best?

Contrary to popular belief, physique and function are NOT mutually exclusive. You do not have to beat up and break down your body (giving up your health) in order to achieve the body of your dreams.

Actually, being in pain, getting hurt and feeling like s**t is the #1 reason people never actually achieve the aesthetic changes they were originally training for in the first place. Ironic, isn’t it?

Bottom line, your training should make EVERY aspect of your life better. That means working to improve your physical, mental and emotional health. And feeling confident in the form and function of your body fits that bill.

But not every program is prepared to delivery these types of multi faceted results. And not every coach can create these changes you are after, let alone have a plan to sustain them for life.

As my clients will attest, their health comes first, and the gains come second in order to sustain them for life, to better their lives, for the rest of their lives.

This is the definition of health first functional training.
