There’s something powerful about closing your car door, putting on your backpack, and walking into the wilderness with everything you need on your back.

In this clip from the Just Hyke Podcast, Kerry from Jet Girl Hikes shares why solo hiking and backpacking can be such a confidence-building experience. From self-reliance and problem-solving to personal growth and adventure, the trail has a way of showing us what we're truly capable of.

Whether you're preparing for your first solo hike or your next backpacking trip, this conversation is a reminder that confidence is built one step at a time.

Ready and on board! Heading out to California and the Desolation Wilderness Area! project

What mistake did you make when you first started hiking?

Most new hikers don’t get into trouble because they’re unprepared, they get into trouble because they don’t know, what they don’t know.

I’ve seen hikers:
- Start too fast
- Wait too long to hydrate
- Wear the wrong clothing
- Attempt distances beyond their current fitness level

Hiking isn’t about being the fastest or going the farthest. It’s about making smart decisions so you can enjoy the journey and come back wanting to do it again.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned on the trail?

Nature Photography Week

After a rain, the flowers seem to come alive. I love how the raindrops cling to the petals, adding a little extra beauty to an already perfect bloom.

Moments like this are why I always keep my camera (or phone) handy.

Do you enjoy nature photography? Share one of your favorite photos in the comments. I’d love to see what you’ve captured in the great outdoors!

Why Pennsylvania Is One of America's Most Underrated Outdoor States

When people think about outdoor adventure, states like Colorado often get all the attention.

But Pennsylvania has an incredible outdoor recreation industry, thousands of miles of trails, world-class state parks, waterfalls, paddling opportunities, and outdoor destinations that many people overlook.

In this clip from the Just Hyke Podcast, author and outdoor creator Tory Mather explains why Pennsylvania deserves more recognition as a premier outdoor recreation destination.

This weekend I assisted two hikers who were experiencing heat-related issues on the trail. With a lot of patience, frequent breaks, and teamwork, we were able to get them safely back to their vehicle and some much-needed air conditioning.

The experience is a good reminder that summer hiking requires extra planning and respect for the conditions.

A few heat safety tips:

• Pre-hydrate before your hike. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking.
• Slow your pace. Hot and humid conditions place additional stress on your body.
• Adjust your distance expectations. The trail will still be there another day.
• Take breaks in the shade whenever possible.
• Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, weakness, or confusion.
• Hike with others when possible and look out for one another.

There’s no shame in turning around early. A successful hike isn’t measured by miles completed—it’s measured by everyone getting home safely.

Stay hydrated, stay aware, and enjoy the trails responsibly.

I was lucky enough to capture this beautiful takeoff at Lake Woodlands.

The Great Blue Heron never seems to be in a hurry.

Have you ever stopped to watch a heron hunt or take flight?
