It has seemed the last few years that we are seeing more and more black bears. We’ve never encountered a threatening experience even though at times we have been inside of yards! Nature is such an amazing thing to observe and on this day we got to watch a mother bear teach her cub how to harvest protein dense larva from a hornets nest. We heard her let out a few yowls as the protective hornets let her have it with relentless stings. The young cub was smart and moved up the hill away from the danger. Finally after getting enough stings and probably most of the larva, mama proceeded to take the baby further up the canyon right past where we were sitting. The wind was perfect and didn’t blow our cover!

We feel so grateful we have the opportunity to observe these neat experiences! In reality you begin to see so many similarities between animals and humans. We really aren’t that different.

The summer and fall can run a guy ragged! You’re in the best physical shape from chasing all over the mountains and many days your calorie intake is running a deficit. Once you get some time to recover you find yourself yearning for the grind! There is a reason God created seasons and we find we love each of them for different reasons.

Being given the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the mountains often grants us the chance to experience some pretty neat things! This post highlights one of those!

Elk are such amazing animals. They have incredible awareness, stamina, strength and grit! This particular bull was obviously a dandy bull, who had lived through the challenges of the this earthly existence. His horn growth indicates he possibly sustained an injury or some sort the year(s) prior to the horns you see pictured. He had smaller G1 and G2s on the right side along with a drop-tine underneath his g3 which is pretty unique. He had incredible mass which indicates good genetics but also age! He had probably been a dominate bull for a couple years based on his size and run a harem of cows.. This particular year we know of an even larger bull that was running this area! We assume a battle ensued and the main-beam on this unique bull was broken, leaving him defenseless on that left side of his body! We wish we could have seen how it all unfolded but upon investigating the bull, it appeared he finally succumbed to the hardships of life and the puncture wounds sustained in the battle.

Now the puncture wounds videoed could have come after he died! Who knows, but it sure makes you wonder if they were the cause of his death!

Life is not easy for any creature placed upon this earth. We all experience hardship, trials and eventually death. Ultimately how we live and choose to endure is the true sign of strength. Every time I think of this bull I see signs of a creature who endured and kept fighting until he couldn’t fight any longer!

Had to do a little predator control this morning!

I had just dropped the kids off at the bus stop and noticed when I got home there was a dog wandering through the cows! I grabbed my binoculars and quickly determined it was a coyote. Just two days prior I had a calf born out of a cow I had purchased last year that had been bred a little early for our country. Fortunately the calf has been doing great, but newborn calves can be susceptible to coyotes the first few days of their lives!
I grabbed the .22-250 and ran out there but by the time I got to where he had been, he was hundreds of yards away and leaving the area! The only call I had was an elk diaphragm and it did the trick. I used it to mimic a coyote yip and he turned and came on a trot my direction! Kind of reminded me of elk hunting during the rut. I just might have to get into Coyote hunting!

The off season is hard but finding activities like this can help squelch the fire a little!
