Guest River Gorge is a rugged, majestic mountain chasm with an ancient heritage and important cultural significance. The Guest River Gorge is a classic rails to trails project that has proven very successfu

l, as its become a popular hiking-biking route through a scenic but otherwise inaccessible mountain gorge. It is home to:

Black Bears ( Ursus americanus )
Devils Walking Stick ( Aralia spinosa )
Smooth Azalea ( Rhododendron arborescens )
Virginia Spiraea ( Spiraea virginiana )
Green Salamander ( Aneides aeneus )
Green Heron ( Butorides virescens ),

and a truly diverse array of plant species suitable for attracting the 130++ different species of butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and damselflies that enrich the mountain landscape. It is an American Whitewater rated Class IV-V run of surprisingly high quality to many first time runners, featuring 100 feet per mile of mean gradient ( average drop in feet per mile of river ). It is complete, with many very dangerous settings amid this boulder filled gorge during its 8 mile AW rated course.

The Guest River Gorge Scenic Trail is celebrating its 25th anniversary on June 27th 2015. Be a part of the celebrations and join us for the Guest River Gorge Rails to Trails 10k and 1 Mile Kid's Run in Coeburn, Virginia beginning at 8am. Come run with us through the historic Swede Tunnel constructed in 1922 and enjoy views of the Guest River from the trail.
