Iā€™ve been busy with new clients lately. New clients mean somewhat difficult horses to work on. They hurt. They struggle to stand on 3 legs.
We do our best to show them how to stand to hold each leg, posture and then make it as comfortable as we can to get our work done.

I have to share that some of the horses I take on as clients are a lot of work. Feet that havenā€™t been worked on in at least 6 monthsā€¦ itā€™s upsetting - the neglect. But I am thankful that the owners do call me. These horses need all the help we can give.

This particular foot is not doneā€¦ but many times a horse in this shape just canā€™t stand very long.

If you saw the news about America's wild horses going to slaughter and felt sick about it ā€” here's what actually helps. Not a petition. Phone calls.

The New York Times published an investigation on August 20 showing that mustangs rounded up off public lands are being sold cheap through a BLM program and ending up in the slaughter pipeline across our borders. Roughly 3,700 were sold in 2025 ā€” more than double previous years.

Three things you can do this week:

1ļøāƒ£ CALL ABOUT THE FUNDING BILL. For decades, Congress has attached language to the Interior spending bill that bars BLM from killing healthy wild horses or selling them without slaughter protections. The White House budget request for FY27 leaves it out ā€” again. Congress has to put it back.

Say: "I'm calling about FY27 Interior appropriations. Please keep the longstanding prohibition on selling wild horses to slaughter or destroying healthy ones."
(Washington folks ā€” Senator Murray is Vice Chair of Senate Appropriations. Our calls land directly on this bill.)

2ļøāƒ£ ASK FOR AN INVESTIGATION. Advocates have filed complaint after complaint about sales violations and gotten nowhere. Ask your representative to request a GAO investigation into the BLM Sale Authority program.

3ļøāƒ£ SUPPORT THE SAFE ACT. H.R. 1661 / S. 775 would permanently ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. It has 226 House cosponsors. Ask yours to sign on ā€” make this a separate call so it doesn't get muddled with the roundup issue.

If you're at auctions or around kill pens: photograph freeze brands. That documentation is what builds enforcement cases. American Wild Horse Conservation and Skydog Sanctuary are collecting it.

Used perfect hoof wear to make a stabilizing boot that is removable so I can treat the wound each day.

Practicing emergency podiatry on my own horse.
He sliced off some of the hoof wall in his front left quarter. Blood everywhere. Have been cleaning it, bandaging and changing every day. Finally it sloughed off the dead material and has some granulation under it. I used silvetrasol to clean it and treat it, used my Visum light wrap with IR and then bandaged with manuka honey and calcium alginate pads.
Today I needed to trim him and get that hoof stabilized a bit better. I trimmed him and then made a removable boot for the foot out of Perfect Hoof Wear, which I can remove and treat and rebandage and put back on that essentially acts like additional
Hoof wall. There is a piece of sole mates pad over the hole to protect from the wrap edge.

I wonā€™t lie, it was stressful but worked fabulous. He is walking around sound and seems happy.
