I've been training athletes for over 20 years and have learned a few things watching them...

What is the key to success in any Athletic development Training program???

It's not about a new fancy training program because athletes simply need to become amazing at doing the basics...

It's not about training at the best facility because again it doesn't take much equipment to get good at the basics to see results...

It's not about the trainer. As long as the coach teaches good technique and progessions it's all the tools an athlete really needs.

It's not about training harder or getting pushed. More intensity in a training program long term can never be maintained. Either injury, burnout or both will happen.

The key to long term success in any training program is:
CONSISTENCY

Those athletes who show up day after day consistently throughout the year are the ones who see results. They train week after week regardless of what season they are in. These athletes typically have a high level of intrinsic motivation...meaning they have ability to motivate themselves and look past the monotony of training, fatigue soreness etc. They know that every training session regardless of what was accomplished is long term money in the bank.
Want to get good at something? Do it consistently for a long time!

I've heard it all:

Kids shouldn't pay for this...
Its babysitting...
Kids should be lifting...
Kids should be training like the pros do...
The Europeans do it better...
This is not how "celebrity coach" does it...
Where's the drills...
My club team is looking for something more serious...

Just remember you don't get "athletic" running around cones or doing silly robotic running drills.

Our college athletes in a one hour and thirty minute Speed training session edited down to one minute and thirty seconds.

Take note of of the prep work. Speed training isn't agility ladders, running around cones and sleds. And its certainly is not training to fatigue.
Floor work, mobility, movement skill, balance, stability, sprint tech, core, plyometrics and strength training all play a part in building a bigger athletic engine for the athletes to work from.

Please check out my new article on equipment needs for youth athletic development...
