🌟 Embrace Imperfection: The Journey of a Coach 🌟
"The perfect coach." It's a title I once believed I had to embody when I first started coaching. Looking back, it's clear to me now how misguided that notion was.
In those early years, I felt the pressure to be flawless—to have all the answers, to never make mistakes. I thought that's what it took to earn my athletes' trust and belief in what I was teaching.
But oh, how wrong I was.
I recall the moments of blunders—subbing at the wrong moment in a crucial match, mixing up the lineup, or designing a drill that fell flat on its face. And each time, I scrambled to deflect blame, to mask my imperfections behind excuses and justifications.
It's almost embarrassing to admit it now.
What if, instead, I had owned up to my mistakes? What if I had shown vulnerability and humility, apologizing to my team and pledging to do better?
It was a risk I wasn't willing to take back then, too focused on proving myself and afraid of what vulnerability might reveal.
Connection—that's what I sacrificed in my pursuit of perfection. Connection with my team as fellow humans navigating the ups and downs of the game.
Today, I'm grateful for a different perspective.
Embracing imperfection, cultivating authenticity, and extending compassion to myself in the process—that's my journey now. It's uncomfortable at times, and I still struggle with it.
But I've come to understand that vulnerability isn't a weakness; it's a bridge to genuine human connection. And if connection is what I truly value, then vulnerability is the path I must walk.
So, I no longer strive to be "The Perfect Coach." Instead, I strive to be real, to own my mistakes, and to share my humanity with my team.
Because in the end, it's through our imperfections that we find our true strength. 💪✨
