SCUBA Tip:
The coral reef is a beautiful creation that divers love to see with lots of color and an abundance of fish and marine life to observe. Coral Reefs are definitely something us divers need to preserve and watch for the future. Besides their elegance, coral reefs do offer us so much more.
Coral Reefs are essential for the marine life. Coral reefs are the most diverse habitats on the planet. Reefs occur in less than 1 percent of the ocean, yet are home to nearly one-quarter of all ocean species. The reefs provide homes, protection, food and nurseries. The ocean’s ecosystem is built from the marine life that thrives on these habitats.
Barrier reefs, larger coral structures, provide protection for our beaches. When close to shore, they dissipate wave energy, reducing erosion and lessening storm damage. The barrier reefs also shelter areas so mangrove habitats may grow, enlarging nursery sites.
Coral Reefs protect people as well. Pharmaceutical companies have begun to focus on the marine environment with medicine breakthroughs. Compounds from marine animals are being tested and one day might provide a cure for a vast array of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and cancer. Some cancer medicine and pain killers were inspired by marine animals and sponges living in the coral reefs.
Not only are coral reefs beautiful to see and to observe all the amazing life in and around, they offer even more value.
