As a follow-up to a recent post, proactively replacing the shifter cables on your Shimano road bike is always a smart move. I suggest doing it every other season—or every season if you log a lot of miles. It’s inexpensive insurance against being stuck with only your hardest gear mid-ride. I worked on one this morning- it can be very time consuming (more expense) fishing the frayed cable end from inside of the shifter housing.

Swapping in new cable housing and fresh bar tape is also a great idea. Fresh tape not only updates the look and feel of your bike but also gives you a chance to check under the tape for corrosion, especially on the band clamps holding the brake levers and shifters. New housing keeps your shifting smooth and precise..
