When the McCrindle research group gathered information on workplace motivators for Gen Z, they found that the top 5 motivators were:
1. Seeing the positive impact of their work
2. The relationships they have with those they work with
3. The responsibility they carry
4. Financial compensation they receive
5. Their performance in the organization
If you can relate to any of those motivators, you need to work at camp this summer! Here’s how spending a summer at camp will meet all those motivators.
1. Positive Impact
Working at camp means making a difference in the lives of the next generation. When you welcome kids at camp, you’ll often get to see growth happen right before your eyes. As you spend a week building a relationship with your campers, help them experience new things and make memories with their cabinmates, you’ll get to see your investment pay off. Kids who come to camp feeling shy or uncertain will leave feeling known and loved and will feel a sense of belonging.
2. Relationship with Teammates
Fellow camp team members become fast friends who feel like family. As you work together towards a common goal, support each other through the ups and downs and have a summer full of fun, you’ll create countless memories with coworkers who likely will become lifelong friends.
3. Responsibility
When a parent drops off their kid to spend a week at camp, they’re placing a lot of trust in those who will be taking care of their children. Working at camp is hard work. You’ll spend most of your day interacting with campers, problem solving and connecting with your peers. It’s hard work but it’s worth it! And it’s a huge honor to be trusted to watch over the campers you’re in charge of.
4. Financial Compensation
Who wouldn’t want to get paid to have fun?! Make money this summer as you zipline, swim, ride horses and go canoeing by working at camp. Spending a summer at camp also means you’ll save money as your housing and meals are provided.
5. Performance in the Organization
After spending a summer at camp, you might find that it’s something you want to continue. Whether you return for multiple summers or want to work at camp year-round, there are plenty of opportunities for growth within camps and conference centers. Oftentimes counselors return after one summer and work on a leadership team. You’re sure to grow in your leadership skills by spending a summer at camp and there are plenty of opportunities to keep growing and developing as a leader. This is why many people say working at camp is better than any internship you could have and the best first job ever.

It is estimated that 83% of organizations understand the importance of investing in leadership development at entry-level leadership roles. Yet only 5% of organizations have done it
You may have seen graphics or read blog posts on how working at camp helps develop leadership skills. That sounds idealistic especially given the previous statistic, but how would working at camp help you grow as a leader? Here are 4 ways that I was supported as a leader while working at camp.
Responsibility
When working at camp, I was given big responsibilities and the leaders ahead of me empowered me by believing in me and showing me that I could handle those responsibilities. Whether it was the responsibility of caring for a cabin of young campers, speaking in front of the entire camp, or leading a staff devotional, I had new experiences while also having a group of people supporting me.
Feedback
How can we improve and grow if we don’t know what we need to work on? At the end of each week of camp, our team had time during staff meetings to individually share with teammates things that they could work on so that we could be improving throughout the summer.
Encouragement
Along with providing constructive feedback during team meetings, we also got a chance to give encouragement and share with our teammates the things that they were doing really well. Sometimes other people see leadership qualities in you that you might not see in yourself. Hearing that you did a wonderful job speaking in front of the camp, showing patience to campers or that your selflessness is noticed by others is encouraging as a young leader. When we become aware of our unique giftings, we can seek out more opportunities to use those abilities.
Inspiration
Throughout the summers I spent at camp, there have been dozens of people I’ve looked up to. I’ve looked up to people for their patience, confidence, humility, ability to address and resolve conflict and for their steadfastness. As a young leader, I was inspired by the staff around me and I took note of the leadership qualities they possessed that I also wanted to have.If you want to grow as a leader this summer.

Something special about joining us ...
You could be working an hourly job at some retail store or restaurant or engaging in free labor in an office internship.
But let’s face it, most likely no one will remember the person who sold them a coffee this morning, and most interns will get tired of observing the action but never being a key player in the midst of it. By choosing to work at summer camp you have set yourself apart.
Elsewhere, adults and peers would barely notice or pay attention to what you have to say or contribute. Working at camp is different.
The kids you work with this summer will remember you, some of them for the rest of their lives. What you gain inside yourself while spending your summer outside with kids can give you a huge advantage in life. Your decision to work at camp will help you “up your game” on the path to becoming a respected adult.
You are on a unique journey now. You are leaving behind the ordinary world and helping create an “outside the ordinary” place where people laugh far more than they cry, have fun far more than they get bored, coexist peacefully far more than they stay in conflict, and often connect more deeply in a few days than some people will in a lifetime.
This journey happens in a place where it does not come at a cost to be unique or with the sacrifice of changing who you are to be accepted. At CBR, you are free (and encouraged) to be yourself.
