Remember Clay City Raceway

Remember Clay City Raceway Preserving the history of a wonderful old race track. Opened in 1964 next to Mt.

Park Dragway in central Kentucky, the banked half-mile Clay City oval was a favorite among drivers and fans for parts of the next four decades. Racing on Friday nights, many of the nation's best dirt aces competed almost every week through the 1960s and parts of the 1970s. The track operated sporadically in the 1980s and 1990s, closing forever after the 2000 season. Hopefully this page can rekindle some great memories and uncover some long buried images of the track's history.

Shared to honor the self-described “tall, skinny yankee,” legendary dirt superstar Larry Moore who took his final checkered flag on Thursday. One of the best ever, I still remember him winning at Clay City in the Don Thompson #27 Monte Carlo. He wrote about that in his book “On Top of the World.”
Rest in peace.

I just uncovered some 1968 Clay City race results by complete accident. This was when CCR ran NASCAR modified points.

July 14, 1968 - Carl Stone won 30-lap feature
July 21, 1968 - Carl Stone (1966 Chevelle) won 30-lap feature, JC Stone (68 Chevelle) was second and Rocky Arnette (Chevelle) third
Sept. 22, 1968 - Ralph Latham won a 33-lap feature (probably Ruth Motors Chevelle)
Sept. 29, 1968 - Armon Smith (Buddy Crouch Plymouth) won a 30-lap feature with Ralph Latham second and Joe Burdette third
Oct. 13, 1968 - Ralph Latham won 30-lap feature, with Armon Smith second and Bill Kimmel third(says 55 Chevy but pretty sure it was a 55 Ford with Chevy power).

We already knew Carl Stone was the track and Kentucky NASCAR points champion in 1968

"Borrowed" the new cover of Butter at Glen Este back in the 1960s. Michael LeFevers unearthed this jewel and had to share it. Believed to be a Stan Jeffrey photo. BB was my dad's favorite driver.

Long time, no post. Work is killing me but I am back working on Kentucky history and one or more books on the subject. Found this recently on a Kentucky blog page. I don't remember ever hearing about this track and apparently they weren't open long. I don't recall passing it whenever we went to Lost Creek. I've borrowed a couple of their posts after seeing a couple names I remember to see if anyone else has any information. They also said Reese Foster raced and won there.

So who wants to share a favorite Scott Bloomquist memory?

08/17/2024

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and fans of Scott Bloomquist who perished this morning in a plane crash on his Mooresburg, Tenn., property. As most of you know, Bloomer was a frequent visitor to Clay City and, more often than not, took home most of the money. He was an all-time talent. As I said on my personal page, if dirt had a Mt. Rushmore, there is no doubt Scott would be there, long hair and all. He was truly the Dale Earnhardt of dirt. As good or better than anyone who ever raced, he had half the fans screaming for him and the rest were booing. He sold the most t-shirts and changed the sport immensely through his technical innovations and his never-ending search for an advantage. Race on Zero. RIP.
