I would like to take a few minutes and talk today about what you require out of your working dog. I have had the pleasure of working with friends this past few weeks with training and prepping for hunt test Pointer edition. I got to say I’ve got the privilege to see some really great dogs work, and some really great upcoming pups. I’ve seen some of the requirements on what these dogs and handlers have to do to pass these hunt test and man these runs have to be performed with perfection. The A.K.C. Has some pretty down to wire set of rules that dogs and handlers have to obide by in order to complete the test which we can get Into at another time. My relationship with Parker wouldn’t even come close to these. I never required him to have all these skills needed to be a champion. I personally never intended to ever compete. Our hunting partnership is pretty cut and dry. He points the birds I flush the birds I shoot the birds he retrieves the bird. It’s that simple to me. Nothing fancy just working and yes he’s got his flaws I’d like to work on like backing a point not stealing the point and such which is in the works before next season but other then that not much more. In some eyes he’s probably pretty sloppy, like his point stance sometimes can look cartoon like😂, but my requirements are pretty much met with him. I can read him like a book in the field as he can with me. He knows what I want him to do and he does it to my standards. But maybe I’m not asking a whole lot either. Which leads me to my next question. What do you require out of your working dog?

Had a great hunt today with two birds down. What a great way to end the season. Prick and Waylon both hunted really well but both are feeling the wrath prick tore up his legs pretty good and Waylon’s got sore paws. Couldn’t ask for more out of them they both worked really well together. Both retrieving birds which is a step up for prick. I hunted him his first season and he got spured in the mouth and hasnt picked up a bird since. Well that changed today i couldn’t have been more proud of him on a great retieve on a nice rooster. Both dogs did well hunting and locking well. My preparation for next season is already in the works. And I can’t wait. I’m thinking maybe a South Dakota trip. Stay tuned.
