🐴 Breed of the Week: The Chincoteague Pony!
🌿 Native to the Assateague Islands, which straddle the state line of Virginia and Maryland, these ponies still roam wild and free to this day.
🏊♀️ In 1874, the island's pony population numbered around 500 horses. Originally ponies were brought over by boats, but over time, they became known for their ability to swim from the mainland, a tradition that continues today during the famous Pony Swim.
☀️Every summer the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company hosts the beloved Pony Penning event, which consists of the annual pony swim, a carnival, and a foal auction. This tradition helps to manage herd size and raise funds for the care and preservation of these unique ponies.
💪Thanks to their adaptation to the harsh, marshy environment, Chincoteague Ponies are known for their stocky build, thick coats and manes, and strong legs and hooves, making them perfectly suited for island life.
