If you study deer biology or read studies done by biologists, hell even read or talk to anyone who owns a whitetail deer ranch you will know there are some biological norms amongst all white tail.
1. Rut for bucks starts as they shed velvet ( this doesn’t mean they are trying to breed right away) this means there testosterone levels increase and they start to road to being a dominant buck.
2. Does go into heat based off each does own biology ( they don’t all go in heat the same time every year that’s just absurd) but just like almost all female mammals they will cycle relatively close together depending on proximity of each other.
3. The entire breeding season is on average 3 months, this depends on your doe to buck ratio and overall population.
4. Deer in one area may not give the same sign or act the same as another. Example Macomb county may be completely different than a more northern county. This is caused by many factors, such as habitat, pressure, and social norms for that group of deer.
5. A bigger Doe population will statistically increase the likelihood of disease. Our current population in the heard was anywhere from 10-20 does per 1 buck given the geographical location. If you want meat you should most definitely shoot does. (It has nothing to do with antlers and everything to do with a healthy heard)
6. Increasing Larger more dominant bucks by taking less bucks and no small bucks will obviously allow bigger “trophies” however it will change the rut and increase deer movement during peak rut phases. More dominant bucks and equal number of does means bucks will inherently increase travel and territory to succeed in breeding.
The whole entire point of this post is experience’s may vary. Just because things are or are not happening where you hunt doesn’t mean that’s not the case for someone else.
Arguing about the rut and deer population is quite frankly absurd, I’m not saying what grandpas and generations of hunters you grew up with are wrong, I’m just saying there is more to it than most people realize. Hell for the longest time i actually thought deer where color blind based off what my grandpa told me when i was 11.
Lastly i have quite a bit training and experience in marksmanship. There has been an increase of people posting about questionable shots, which sucks because as hunters and sportsmen we should know when to shoot and when to hold even if it means letting that big buck walk. Don’t be lazy, shoot your gun and bows throughout the year and at different distances and atmospherics. If you really want to increase your marksmanship i can help or i can point you to some absolute studs in the marksmanship world in just about every area of the state.
Happy thanksgiving! And good luck out there! 🤙🏼🫡
