Last night we ran into a hot-shooting Pullman team that brought our season to a close. While the game was not what we expected, this season is much bigger than one game.
This team has intentionally spent a lot of time together since last June. And while we’ve had so much fun, we certainly battled adversity this season, including a rollercoaster of outcomes (lost 6 league games by a combined 15 points)—adversity that could have broken our spirit. Instead, these kids showed up everyday with hard work, confidence, grit, and a little humor - refusing to let this adversity define us. They believed in the process, invested deeply in their teammates, and proved to themselves that they can do hard things to overcome!
I’m hopeful that what they've learned goes far beyond basketball. They've experienced overcoming adversity, building lifelong relationships, and working for something bigger than themselves - what I believe are foundations for success in the real world.
I've been in 15 end-of-season locker rooms (from State championships to early playoff losses), and believe it or not, they all feel about the same - and last night was no different. The tears and sadness aren't about basketball being over—they're about the daily shared experiences that made up our journey. This means these players invested, cared, and were all in. And those are exactly the right emotions to feel.
I want to thank my players, parents, coaches (and our families), school staff, and community - you make this journey possible!
The season may be over, but what our players learned and who they became will stay with them (and me) forever!
