About 10 years ago I suffered an ulnar nerve compression in my left elbow which resulted in, seemingly permanent, muscle wasting in my left hand. Despite what I was told by 2 different neurologists, I have regained, without medical intervention, sufficient grip strength to accommodate my poverty deadlift. I’m particularly fond of the deadlift because of the ease at which they integrate into fast paced circuits. Therefore, building and maintaining grip strength is of prime importance to me. Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to try to post a few of my favorite exercises for this purpose.

Shown here is a setup that I really enjoy. It eliminates the systemic fatigue associated with the traditional wrist-roller and allows for much more focused attention on just grip strength and forearm activation.

On a related note, I talk to many that are feeling down in the dumps as a result of an injury. My advice is to not accept defeatist thoughts, either from within or from “experts”. Most likely, with the right mind state you’ll get back to where you were, and if you physically just can’t, I promise you’ll get far on the road to a full return, and you should feel proud of yourself for engaging in a tooth and nail struggle that most wouldn’t.

Do constant minor injuries have you sitting on the sidelines when you really want to be out there on the golf course with the crew? Many of my clients used to go through this seemingly endless cycle but once they committed to a core-focused full-body strengthening program, they hopped off the cycle…and for good!!!

Do these 2 exercises look similar? Yes, of course they do! And indeed, they work primarily the same muscle groups. But, the muscle fibers that comprise these groups exist on a continuum of different types that correspond to the different manner in which similar movements get performed when executing real world activities like…say…playing a game of golf! Therefore, if you want to be certain that you’re doing your due diligence in the realm of injury prevention be sure to not only strengthen the multitude of movement patterns that your lifestyle necessitates but also in the differing degrees of intensity that your sport requires!

Whenever I hear fitness-world-people talking to the fitness-inexperienced about fitness-transformations I always hear:

“It’s 75% diet”
“It’s 70% diet”
“It’s mostly diet”

Firstly, I am in agreement with these statements. I am also in agreement with those that denounce the “diet” concept. “Diet” implies “temporary”, it suggests “discomfort”, “fitness-transformation” yes, but as a consequence of “lifestyle-transformation”. Secondly, when I overhear others stating things like the quotes above, I suspect that most (especially if they do not denounce processed “food”) are just parroting what they believe they are supposed to say. I suggest this because I never hear further discussion on this very important topic.

The reason why the majority of your transformation into a truly healthy being hinges upon “diet” or “food” or whatever it is you want to call it (I’ll run with “nutrition”) is because that is your foundation. You don’t want to waste time and energy building upon a shoddy foundation do you? Natural, non-processed food provides the body with the micronutrients that it needs to operate properly on a molecular level. If a significant portion of your nutrition incorporates micronutrient sparse processed items then your body will be unable to optimally repair and heal itself, unable to obtain optimal hormonal balance. Furthermore, especially if you consume things containing products like hydrogenated seed oils and artificial thickeners, you are actually poisoning yourself.

Lastly, when I hear “you don’t have to starve yourself, you don’t have to torture yourself, to transform your body” I agree here too. And I am in agreement because once you eliminate all processed items (drinks too) - once all those toxins are replaced by an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids - your now properly functioning body will reward you with things like weight loss and healthy skin.
