If you hadn’t noticed it’s been kinda warm
In N. GA lately. Maybe a little to warm to fish for trout some days. But this morning it was a cool 67 degrees and just after daylight I had a blast catching some wild rainbows to knock the rust off before an upcoming western trip. The wild rainbows ate a size 16 yellow bodied elk hair with abandon and ten or so came to hand in just over an hour.

The joro spiders are fierce right now though.

If you have been a fly fisher for a while, you might forget how bad you sucked at it when you first begin in the sport. It’s always fun to take a newbie fishing who is looking for the first everything and to let them beat their heads against the wall some. A little gentle coaching and helpful tips goes a long way to shorten the learning curve but it’s still a steep curve to learn how to fish southern Appalachian blue lines among the laurel and dog hobble and the ever present down timber. I have enjoyed teaching my oldest son this summer how to crawl up a laurel tunnel and bow and arrow cast for wild 6” fish. He hasn’t mastered it yet but we starting to get the fly in the right place and put the hook in a few jaws.

It was a rainy mess today but we had fun. Bonus was the rare NF whitetail fawn a bear hadn’t ate yet.

Go fish, take a kid or rookie.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dad’s out there. Take a kid fishing so they to can be broke one day too!

I was scrolling through some native trout pictures and planning this summers adventures. I am only 3 fish and a couple of states away from finishing the Western Native Trout Initiative challenge. 21 fish in 12 states. ( several don’t officially count at the moment making it 18 fish that count )

Enjoy a giant grayling from last years DIY float in Southwest Alaska and some more eye candy to get you ready for the weekend.

If you have any questions about traveling west or Alaska, I would be happy to provide what information I have accumulated. Just send a pm or ask here.

It’s been almost a year since Adam and I fished for brook trout together. Life has threw us curveballs, sliders and an occasional knuckleball. We have gotten out only a few times together in the last couple of years. But today we took a day off. Grabbed the JP Ross S glass 6 foot and 5.5 fter and hit a North Georgia brookie creek. It was rough climbing this one, but the fish were there and we caught more than we deserved and a couple decent ones all on dries. There was some large mayfly drakes, yellow sally stones and some caddis when you crawled through the Rhodo. All the fish were fat as mud. I ( Hamp) exceeded the weight limit of a couple rotten trees here and there crawling over and Adam enjoyed that immensely. Enjoy the photos and go catch a wild fish. If you looking for that heirloom blue line rod, check out JP Ross rods and tell him his wild southern cousins sent ya.

Yesterday was a big day for a blue lining father. I have three kids and they all have caught trout since they could hold a zebco 33. They have been with me In multiple states fishing for native trout but never really in the game. My oldest is 16, driving and has his first job. He had the ability to miss school yesterday so I took him on his fjrst southern Appalachian Brook trout trip. He is big enough to crawl through the Rhodo and crawl up waterfalls and he quickly got the hang of his bow and arrow cast.

I told him there is no pressure for him to ever do it again but I really want them all to know what it is to catch a wild GA brook trout. Take a kid fishing, teach the next generation the joy of a blue line and a wild trout living where God meant it to be.

Side note. We got blessed with a pretty fresh unchewed deer shed as well.

It’s not often I part with fly fishing equipment but I have a lot of horses in the stables at the moment. So I am gonna pass some fine fishing rods along to someone who will fish them and enjoy them.

The first is gonna be the finest production small stream rods ever built. It’s a Sage Light Line 7 foot 4 weight.

This rod was originally purchased by a fellow who fished the Sierra Nevada for golden trout in California. I purchased it from him probably 8 years ago and fished it in the Smokies for several years. It’s been fished. The cork has been held in sweaty fish slimed hands. It’s not beat up or abused. Comes with the original case and rod sock. I would imagine it was built by Sage in mid 1990 something. Excellent dry fly rod. Has enough back bone to handle the biggest wild fish you will encounter and throw a dry dropper or jig streamer on a waterfall pool.

Fish with the finest vintage rod out there for only $450 OBO. Pickup in N. GA. If you want it shipped, its price plus whatever actual shipping is. DM me if interested.

In the pursuit to see the range of the native Brook trout, BLO hit West Virginia this week. WV is an interesting state with lots of water. It took a few days to really nail down the right areas and flies but we came away with some wet camping gear, lots of memories and some native Brook trout in small blue lines. A couple that didn’t show on Topo maps or have names. Go explore and find your own blue lines. It’s prime time.
