Thanks to our AMAZING customers, each year Jack will donate a portion of our proceeds to a charity of Jack's choice. This year he has chosen Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston.
Spaulding Rehab Hospital has a special place in our hearts. In September of 2011, Jack was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We first traveled to Iowa City to the University of Iowa Hospital for surgery to remove the tumor. In October we traveled to Boston to start his radiation treatments at the Francis H. Burr Proton Center at Mass General Hospital. Jack needed extensive rehabilitation, so we were transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
A typical day for Jack would consist of waking up, getting transferred to Mass General for his Proton Radiation treatment in the morning, then coming back to Spaulding for 3 hours of Occupational, Physical, and Speech therapies. If he had any energy left, he would play on his iPad, do crafts, or throw some sort of ball. This was our routine for 6 weeks. We lived with Jack in the hospital so his Doctors, Nurses, and Therapists became like family to us.
When Jack first arrived at Spaulding, he had lost the ability to walk, talk, eat, or swallow. When he left almost 2 months later, he could walk with a walker (assisted), he could talk (with his trach button on), and was on his way to gaining his swallow back. His therapists helped him relearn so many things and also showed us how to help Jack continue once we left.
We will be forever grateful to everyone at Spaulding who took such good care of Jack!
