In working with my clients, I noticed a commonality in the way I was walking them through exercises and the actual coaching I was implementing.
This led me to develop my Pillars so I can begin crafting my signature program around them.
The pillars of Recognize, Realize, and Redirect are interconnected and cyclical. Recognizing your current state allows you to realize deeper insights, which then informs how you can redirect your actions.
Continuously cycling through these pillars fosters ongoing personal growth and development.
Example:
Imagine you're dealing with workplace stress.
1. Recognize: Notice the stress and identify specific situations that trigger it.
2. Realize: Understand why these situations cause stress (e.g., fear of failure, excessive workload) and how this stress affects your productivity and well-being.
3. Redirect: Implement strategies to manage stress, such as time management techniques, delegation, or practicing mindfulness during stressful moments.
By consistently applying these pillars, you can achieve meaningful and lasting change in pretty much every aspect of your life.
To go more in depth:
Pillar 1: Recognize
Recognizing involves becoming aware of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It is the foundational step in any process of change or improvement. Recognition requires mindfulness and self-awareness.
• Awareness of Emotions: Understand your emotional states and what triggers them. Are you feeling stressed, angry, or happy? Identifying your emotions helps in managing them better.
• Behavior Patterns: Observe your habitual behaviors and responses. What are your automatic reactions in certain situations? Recognizing these patterns can help in identifying areas that need change.
• Cognitive Processes: Be aware of your thoughts and beliefs. What assumptions or biases do you hold? Recognizing these can help in challenging and changing them.
Pillar 2: Realize
Realizing is about understanding the implications of your recognitions and gaining insights into why you think, feel, and behave the way you do. This pillar involves deeper reflection and analysis.
• Root Causes: Delve into the root causes of your emotions and behaviors. Why do certain situations trigger specific reactions? Realizing these underlying reasons can provide clarity.
• Impact on Self and Others: Understand the impact of your actions on yourself and those around you. Realizing this can foster empathy and improve relationships.
• Aligning with Values: Reflect on whether your current behaviors and thoughts align with your core values and goals. Realizing this alignment (or misalignment) can motivate change.
Pillar 3: Redirect
Redirecting involves taking actionable steps to change your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a positive direction. This pillar is about transformation and proactive change.
• Behavioral Change: Implement strategies to alter negative behaviors and reinforce positive ones. This can involve setting goals, creating action plans, and developing new habits.
• Cognitive Restructuring: Challenge and change negative thought patterns. This can involve using techniques like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to reframe thoughts.
• Emotional Regulation: Develop skills to manage and regulate your emotions effectively. This includes techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and developing emotional resilience.
