New article from the WHO about "raising real prices on to***co, alcohol, and sugary drinks by at least 50% by 2035"
I don't think that increasing the price of things that we area aware are not good for our health will really solve everything.
These three things chosen are crutches, I should know as I use one (sugar)
To***co in ci******es has been switched out for va**ng - seen more as an aesthetic than stress relief.
Alcohol is a major cultural part of our society. Remember the Prohibition and how well that went? To change the view and consumption of alcohol we might need an even bigger overhaul than a price hike.
Regarding sugary drinks; what drink can you buy at the supermarket that doesn't have sugar? Soft drinks, juice (albeit natural sugars), energy drinks (to an extent). I feel that being in the USA the pallet is geared to the extremes; sweet, salty and spicy. And the drinks you can get from the shops are already cheap; it will make the drinks more of a treat then. Regular intake of sugary anything requires a detox not a price deterrent.
Alright, I said my thing - goodnight all
The World Health Organization (WHO) today has launched a major new initiative urging countries to raise real prices on to***co, alcohol, and sugary drinks by at least 50% by 2035 through health taxes, in a move designed to curb chronic diseases and generate critical public revenue.
