On this date 1990: The Cincinnati Reds completed a four-game World Series sweep over the Athletics with a 2-1 victory in Oakland.

I'll never forget the growing sense of concern in the game, after the Reds lost two members of the starting lineup in the 1st inning.

Billy Hatcher left the game in the 1st inning after being hit by a 90 mph pitch on the top of his left hand from Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart. It was feared he'd broken his hand.

Eric Davis was injured in the bottom of the 1st inning: He made a diving attempt for a sinking liner off the bat of Willie McGee. He lacerated his kidney. Davis initially stayed in the game before collapsing in the dugout, and being rushed to the hospital.

But Jose Rijo gave up a single run in the 1st inning but locked in after that, at one point retiring 20 consecutive batters from the 3rd inning into the 9th. Randy Myers recorded the final two outs to secure a 2-1 victory and complete the historic 4-0 series sweep.

Rijo was named series MVP for his wins in Game 1 and 4.

Happy 76th birthday to the smoooooooothest Cincinnati Bengals player of all-time: Isaac Curtis.

1st round (15th overall) 1973 NFL Draft/San Diego State

In 1974 and 1975, he AVERAGED 21.1 and 21.2 yards per catch!

He averaged 17.1 yards per catch for his career.

Curtis was so good, opponents were left with mauling him all the way down the field as the only way of defending him. Paul Brown lobbied for and got passed, "The Isaac Curtis Rule"

"A defender is allowed to block a receiver within five yards of the line of scrimmage. After the initial yards, any contact will be considered holding, which is a five-yard penalty and an automatic first down."

When I scored a TD in the backyard, I dropped the nerf football over my shoulder, just like Curtis!

Cincinnati Bengals moves:

*Signed S Russ Yeast off the practice squad to the active roster. Yeast, a third-year player, was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for two games this season and has recorded three tackles.

*Released S Isaiah Nwokobia from the practice squad. Nwokobia, a rookie out of Southern Methodist University, signed on Sept. 29 to Cincinnati’s practice squad, where he spent the past two games.

*Signed TE Josh Kattus to the practice squad. Kattus (6-4, 247), a rookie out of the University of Kentucky, originally was a college free agent signee of the Bengals in May and spent this past offseason and training camp with Cincinnati. He was waived by the Bengals on Aug. 30 and was not with a team for the first six weeks of the regular season.

*Signed LB Emany Johnson to the practice squad. Johnson (6-2, 216), a first-year player out of the University of Nevada, originally was a college free agent signee of Dallas in 2024. He spent his rookie season on the practice squads of the Cowboys and L.A. Chargers, then spent the entire ’25 campaign on the Chargers’ practice squad. He was not with a team for the first six weeks of this season.

The Cincinnati Bengals are back from the bye, and it’s time for Zac Taylor to show us what he’s got.

Five mixed-bag performances down, 12 potential job-status-deciding games to go.

Zac and the coaches spent the bye week self-scouting, tweaking and gameplanning.

And there was a lot to address: The run-game disconnect, lack of explosive plays, under-center vs sh***un, defensive containment of the perimeter, coverage of the tight-end over the middle, penalties and lack of discipline.

Have Zac and his staff ‘figured it out’? The answer will determine the fate of the all-in Bengals…. and likely Zac.

Anyone really think Zac survives a fourth consecutive miss of the playoffs, after that franchise changing mindset and financial commitment in the offseason? Anyone think just making the playoffs will suffice?

It won’t be easy. An early bye leaves the Bengals 12 consecutive weeks of football ahead. That includes a trip to Madrid and a quick turnaround Thursday night game.

Can Zac alter the DNA issues of his teams at home and in division games? In his eighth season, his teams have a losing record in divisional play (16-27), and at Paycor Stadium (29-31). Five division games remain, five road games, one neutral site matchup.

It all starts Sunday: Lose to the Ravens, and the Bengals would be 3-3, 0-2 in the division. They’d be the lone AFC North team without a division win. Potentially 1.5 games out of 1st place. With three conference losses.

Zac’s previous teams have certainly shown a finishing kick. 5-0 to close 2024, 4-2 down the stretch in 2023, 8 in a row to finish 2022, and 3 of the last 4 in 2021.

Sunday feels big. It begins a three month long stretch run.

Time to kick it into gear. Or, handover the keys after the season.

We hiked: Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Old Man's Cave, Conkles Hollow, Rose Lake Loop Trail, and The Natural Bridge at Rockbridge State Nature Preserve.

We enjoyed: Hocking Hills Inn and Coffee Emporium, Millstone BBQ, Pizza Crossing, M & M Family Diner and 58 West.
